Dry Lake - South Fork Trail

Alpine Lake (Seasonal) in your face views of San Gorgonio, wildflowers, streams
Near:Angelus Oaks, CA
Scenery:
Distance:12.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2400 ft
Hike Time:6.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: If you time this one right, you are in for a real treat. Dry Lake got its name for an obvious reason. As the summer progresses, the lake dries up and becomes a meadow. However, during runoff, the lake is a beautiful alpine reflection of the wilderness, and worth every uphill step it takes to get there.

The trail passes by several streams, this year (2005) after all the rain, they were virtual rivers. In late June there were wildflowers everywhere, and water was abundant. Earlier, there was so much snow as to make the trip improbable without snow gear, and there is a real danger of avalanche here too, so only go in winter if you are experienced in snow outings. This hike takes place entirely on North facing slopes.

There are some nice stops like Horse Meadows along the trail, and while it is steep, it is pleasantly graded, enough so that horses routinely travel this route.

South Fork is one of the most popular routes in the wilderness.

Trailhead: Take the 10 east to Redlands, exit University Ave. Turn right and then make a quick left at the light onto Citrus. Turn left again on Judson/Ford St. Follow it to Lugonia Ave(38). make a right. Lugonia becomes Mentone Blvd and Mill Creek Road. Permits are required for all trips into the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Get them early, this is a popular trail. The ranger station is a few miles from Redlands on the right hand side of the road. Continue on the 38 past Mountain Home Village. Follow the 38 as it makes the hairpin turn left and continue up the mountain. Follow it past Angelus Oaks and turn right onto Jenks Lake Road. Continue to the trailhead parking for South Fork Trail.

Park in the enormous Disneyland size parking lot and head south across the road for the trailhead. The trail is well marked all the way to Dry Lake, and there are some side routes and trail junctions. Pay attention to the signs. (Lat:34.12159 Lon:-116.82919)

Hiked on Sept 9, 2006. Wedidn't go to dry lake, we stayed on the trail to the summit. 22.6 miles round trip. A real ass kicker. I made it in 7.5 hours, with plenty of breaks. 3.5 down. Take plenty of water. Had a great time. Next time I'll be better prepared. If I had to describe it in 1 word "long". Just 6 in our group, too many others bitched out.

Hiked this on August 11, 2006 from 10:30 AM to 3:30. A very pleasant route. The elevation rise of 2400 ft. is barely noticable. Shady most of the way and lots of water in the streams. Dry Lake seemed quite full--even this late in the summer.

Did hike 10/22/05 10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM Beautiful weather aided us on the this great hike. Did the summit via Vivan Creek before, but this time we stopped at Dry Lake. We stayed a the lake for several hours enyoing the pictureous view. The whole hike was breathtaking. Definitely will do this hike again, and again. The rain this winter really helped.

This wilderness is some of the best in SoCal if you can go on weekdays. Many side routes to 10000 foot peaks etc. Dollar Lake is worth the side trip. My last trip was 7/22/05 and I had a great time in a very severe T storm. Several nice camps in the area also. Enjoy

This is a very cool hike. you can make it a 22 mile loop if you veer right at the dollar lake dry / lake junction...head toward dollar lake-then summitt mt. San Gorgonio (the tallest peak in So. Cal. - 11,501)-then pack down to Dry Lake. The trail is a bit uneventful till you reach a couple miles before the summit - then it opens up and is super cool all the way to dry lake - very pretty mountain lake - great payoff for packing over the mt. all in all a very cool 2 or 3 day getaway from LA...can clear your head, heart and lungs.
