Summary: Although this is primitive hiking & camping; it gets 3 stars because of access to the lake and relative solitude. There is no designated or marked trails along here, although the gravel road works in a pinch, or a rainstorm. By horseback you can make out faint game paths to follow in and out of the hills sloping towards the coves, but if on foot, I find walking along the shoreline the best method to enjoy this area. What were quiet pristine cliffs primarily inhabited by birds, coyotes, and bighorn sheep just a few years ago are now filled with fishermen, SUVers, running children and RV's on the weekend. Weekdays are almost always secluded though and the further you hike from the first fork, the quieter it gets. Water rhythmically lapping against the shore, the shrill sounds of birds looking for prey, the occasional fish jumping out of the water makes the jet ski noise fade away in my mind. The sun can be brilliant and unforgiving if you wander far from the water. Trailhead: 8.0 (eight point oh) Mile Road is located at the 8 mile marker (sign) along Lake Mead's Northshore Road, between Government Wash and Black Mesa (Callville). You can reach Northshore Road (within fee area of park) by heading East on either Lake Mead Boulevard (off I-15, through North Las Vegas and over Sunrise Mountain); or on Lake Mead Drive (off I-93/95, through Henderson, and past Lake of Las Vegas resort). If coming in via Lake Mead Blvd. (NLV), it's 15 miles from the traffic light at Hollywood Blvd. until your turnoff from Northshore Road. It is washboard gravel road from the turnoff all the way to the water. Follow the road past the sharp "S" curve and take any one of 4 main gravel roads, with many arms leading to the lake. Don't leave the hardpack high cliffs unless you have 4WD and know how to use it -- vehicles get stuck out here daily. Trailers can park on the top and walk or ride down to the shoreline. This is a primitive camping area w/no trash or RR.
