Summary: Take a peaceful 1 or 2 mile hike in this oasis of greenery and woodland in the midst of urban Long Beach. Once you step inside the nature center you enter a special world with two beautiful lakes, forested trails, turtles basking in the sun, and blue heron swooping over the waters. There is an amazing diversity of wildlife.

Across the street from the Nature center is the huge El Dorado Regional Park, with bike trails, more lakes for fishing, a miniature train kids can ride, and several playground areas. Turn this into picnic outing with the family. Thanks to Bob Carley for suggesting this hike!

Trailhead: Take the southbound 605 towards Long Beach and exit at Spring Street, turn right, then left into the El Dorado Nature Center. (Lat:33.80986 Lon:-118.08575)

This is by far my personal favorite walk/ hike. It is easy, close to the city, and still you feel you walked to Angelest forest. I'm a beginner so this walk is perfect for me. Sometimes when I had a hard day at work or week I like to come for a walk and just enjoy nature. The only bad this is that they don't allow dogs but there is a nice park right across from it and you can take your dog there!!! I defiantly recommend this park to anyone looking for a quick get away.

I took my family today. The turtles were fun to see. However, the two mile trail was closed due to nesting owls. I wish I had known, no dogs allowed. We took our golden and had to leave her in the truck. We did enjoy the walk. Couldn't really call it a hike.

This is a very nice hike for children. My brother and I took our four children, ages 3, 5, 7 and 16 here for a day hike. The turtles were quite entertaining as it is mating season. All of the children easily finished the hike and loved all the different foliage including the poppies.

This hike is my new favorite mostly because it's a safe place to walk for two miles with my stroller. I actually start the walk from my house for extra exercise and so I don't have to pay the 4 dollar parking every day. My son is only 7 months and he seemed to enjoy the bumpy ride and the very friendly ducks!

We went on this hike on Saturday 1/13/07 and it was very pretty. Easy enough for our 7 year old son. He really enjoyed all the different birds you can see. They even have binoculars that he got to take a closer look at them. Truely recommend for families with young children. Bring a lunch to make it more special.

I love this little nature center! It is a great place to get away while still remaining in the city area. This place is great for birders too. Red-shouldered and Cooper's Hawks nest here in the spring along with many other neat species. One unusual visitor is a regular Northern Cardinal. He shows up in the spring time and sings his heart out. Cardinals aren't usually seen in southern California. Staff are all very friendly. I would easily recomend this place for birders, families and people who enjoy nature. There are three trails- a 2 mile, a 1 mile and a fourth-of-a-mile paved trail. (Paved trail is great for wheelchairs or those who have troubles walking on unpaved ground) Enjoy your hike!
