Summary: This was my second time hiking in Harriman. There are many trails to explore in the area. This hike I did today starts out on the A.T. were you climb up Green Pond Mt and then past Island Pong. The trail also takes you through the Lemon Sqeezer, a hole in some ledges that you have to push your way through and then a nice ledge to boulder up. Then the trails climbs up Island pond Mt and Surebridge Mt. Then I took the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail on Finger board and Hogencamp mtn. This stretch of trail has great views of the entire area. It is also the result of a forest fire some time ago. It is neat to see how the vegetation is coming back and you get to see how the landscape looks with very little trees. Then I took the Dunning tr. to the Boston Mine. From there I took the Arden-Surebridge tr. down Green Pond Mt were I saw 4-5ft Black Snake. The best part of the hike was the trails go through many Hemlock forest, past swamps and you get great climbs. Trailhead: From Warwick NY take 17A east past Greenwood lake and Sterling Forest. Make a left onto 17N. Take to Arden Valley Rd. Make right onto Arden valley Rd. Go over thruway, make right into parking (Elk Pen) (Lat:41.26526 Lon:-74.15294) Trail Guides for Elk Pen Loop, Harriman SP, NY: Harriman State Park Bear mountain State Park Maps by NY/NJ Trail Conference (NY/NJ Trail Conference) Best Seasons: Year-Round User Groups: Hikers, Ranger Contact: Harriman State Park Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Shawn Viggiano, who has posted 44 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Submit your own review Dug it. The hike was a fantastic hike, and I did see many deer and other animals, but no bears. A bit crowded towards the lake, but otherwise was a fantastic hike. Definitely would do it again. buetifull day, great hike added some miles to this hike, with some excursions. deer everwhere, almost stepped on a buck and doe laying down atop r-d trail. great views , will hike again. can be done in 5 hours, i was on for 6 but added a mile or two, no lunch no real breaks. just solitude I have hiked this trail on a number of occasions. Going thru the lemon squeezer, and then climbing to the top of island mountain always leaves me out of breath. The only thing that bothers me about this stretch is that i am starting to hear alot of jets overhead. I think they are coming out of stewart or newburgh. Otherwise i love hiking this part of harriman. I have recently started hiking the long path, and there are some beautiful views, especially right before arden valley road. Will take most hikers 7 hours not counting lunch, unless you run. After a rain, even a few days past, the trails can get really wet. The Lemon Squeeser is always fun. it was vry nice. there was lots of scenery and animals llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss of them including bears. i liked it so much im going back No way anyone does this Hike in 5 hours. No way no how. Expect at least 6 hours to complete. Very nice combination of elevation and trails though.. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
