Summary: This Fire Ecology Trail is an excellent opportunity to teach children and people new to Southern Nevada about our fragile desert terrain and the diverse environmental conditions. There is abundant signage along this trail which explains habitat and how adverse conditions can affect it. This loop trail takes you through both drainages of lower Pine Creek and you get to walk among Ponderosa Pine trees -- which are extremely unusual at this low of an elevation. The cacti can be vicious if you wander off the trail and there is absolutely no reason to venture away from the rock-lined path. There is a picnic table under the trees when you reach the first drainage (or creek). Continue to the next drainage and you'll find more wooden benches to rest and enjoy the scenery. Water normally flows in this lower section of Pine Creek from early spring until mid-summer, depending on flood/drought conditions. Pine Creek is prime for deer, burros & humans.
Trailhead: Be advised that the USGS topo does NOT accurately reflect the location of the scenic loop road within Red Rock National Conservation Area. 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave (SR 159) to Red Rock entry (fee) station. Take the scenic loop to Pine Creek parking (fills up early) -- RR here but NO WATER AVAILABLE anywhere within Red Rock Canyon; be sure and bring your water with you! Descend the steep trail from parking area and head SW towards Pine Creek. Look for the sign about 1/4 mile from the parking area for the Fire Ecology Trail turn. If you see the sign for Dale's Trail, you've already passed the turn for Fire Ecology Trail. Do not take the many foot paths cutting through the desert -- this is a fragile area and the damage you cause will last for decades and negatively affect the wildlife and their habitat. The Fire Ecology trail is rock lined the entire way and is VERY EASY to follow. If this trail only whets your appetite, try Skull Rock. (Lat:36.12608 Lon:-115.47691)
