Summary: This trail starts in the town of Monte Cristo and is a very strenous trail. It is vertical the whole way up. It it moderate at first but the closer you get to the top the more vertical it gets. But totally worth the sweat. There is a beautiful snow melt water fall and at times you can feel the breeze that will cool you off as most of this trail is in the sun (don't forget the sun screen). The trail gets bushy but there are many berry bushes along the way and pending on your timing of the year, you can have quite a feast. After curving around the mountain you will come to flat area where you will be at the entrance to an old gold mine. I believe this is technically the end of the trail but I encourage you to keep following the river further till you see the saddle/pass between the peaks. (I feel this will be an obvious site) Then it will be a scramble up a boulder field to the saddle. Now this is the place to have lunch! Trailhead: Take Mountain Loop Highway thru Granite Falls to Barlow Pass. You will pass two very distinct bridges the first one is blue and the second is red. Also you will know that you are at Barlow Pass becuz the paved road ends. There is a parking lot on the left hand side or you can park along the road. You will need a parking pass available at the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest ranger station that you pass as you enter the forest. ($7 for the day or $30 for the year) After completing the 4.19 trek (hike, bike, horse, or if fortunate to have a key drive) into Monte Cristo, continue on thru the town where you will see the signs for Glacier Basin Trail. Very hard climb.....last mile is straight up! once you get up b the basin the gold mies are all blasted closed. not too much to do...very beautiful! I agree with the previous review 100%. We hiked yesterday, 8/4/06, great weather, views and unfortunately my last hike before moving to Austin. ** I wanted to warn any readers about our bear encounter. Right before you come to the 1st curve where you see the waterfall-where it is brushy with blackberries and still an easy hike before the strenuous parts, we came across a medium to large bear. He must have heard us and came barreling out of the brush 25 ft in front of us right onto the trail. He ran the other way (thank God) but if it wasn't for our dogs who knows what could have happened. Please wear your bear bells and travel with others as well as your 4 legged furry friends.*** During mid-July....more snow..tiny little mini-streams, clouds floating throught the spires....way up there......delicious. Art indeed! Just did this one on Monday, climb is steep, sombody put in some rope at the worst part (2 sections) of it and that seemed to help my old bones from getting broken. Really worth the time to do it! This trail is difficult, hot and steep. Make sure you bring plenty of water. We parked at Barlow Pass and walked to the basin, but I would recommend against it. Ride your bike into Cristo as it's an easy, flat 4 miles each way. The basin is breathtaking. The accessible mines, glaciers, ice caves, and waterfalls have made this my favorite hike in WA. Not for the novice though. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
