Summary: This is, in my book, a very enjoyable hike. The scenery is beautiful, the trail is excellent, and what you get to see once you achieve this hike, is without a doubt well worth it. The only down fall to this trail is the amount of people that use it. the trail starts off by going left to go to Alberta Falls, or right to Bear Lake. go left to Alberta falls, the trail is very wide and well maintained. beautiful views of then high peaks all along this trail. The Bear lake cooridor is at a lofty 9,475ft and most of its trails ascend higher so take caution with altitude. the actual falls are only .6 mile up this steady gain of about 160' feet. Once at the falls you can get some great views of the park and also great pictures of waterfalls and the mountains. if you go past the falls you can connect w/ several lakes above 10,000 feet and there is a series of trails that connect together and lead back to same trailhead. All well maintained trail.Great Hike! Trailhead: From the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, turn left on Bear Lake rd. towards Sprague Lake and Bear Lake. Park at the Ride and Go and pick up the shuttle from there to the Bear Lake corridor. get off the bus at Glacier Gorge Junction. from there you get on the trail across the other side of the road. I was kindof hoping they'd put porta poddies along trail so people wouldnt have to pee on the trails. I figure at least 2 on the trail up to the Falls, then tear out some of the big rocks at the falls to make room for a full blown toilet facility. Id also like to see a consession stand at Black Lake for those continuing further. Till then I'll just enjoy the natural beauty and be thankfull that my son doesnt hike back down the trail with pee running down his leg into his boots. There are a lot of people on the trail, but that sortof makes it fun. Travel further on to Mills if you dont want to stand in line to look at the falls. More people = more pee. Sadly that does mean people traveling off the trail. Rock hop For people with small children I would recommend taking the bus to Bear Lake and walking from Bear Lake to Alberta Falls then doubling back on yourself and when you see the sign for Glacier Gorge Junction/Shuttle bus bear right onto this trail. This drops you onto the downhill path to the shuttle stop. This route is pretty much downhill for the most part and the little ones find it easier. As for the review mentioning the boy urinating behind a tree - what was he supposed to do? and where do you think the animals go?? :-) Obviously not someone with a family! Nice hike. Many people/families on trail. Sad to see so many people walking off the trail and climbing on the rocks. Remember we are only visitors to RMNP. Stay on the TRAILS. Saw 2 people intentionally litter, 1 6-7 year old boy urinating behind a tree. If you don't like to see people destroying nature and ignoring the "stay on the trail" signs, stay away from this hike. Very sad. Nice hike for the whole family! My family had an awesome time on this hike. It was breath takeing for my wife and I. We have 3 boys age 13, 11, and 8, and they all had a great time going off the trail to climb the rocks and boulders along the trail. This is great for those who have adventurous kids. You will never forget it if you do it. The hike is really wonderful. The rocky mountain pass is a bit expensive at $20 for 7 days, but the annual pass is $35, so it turns out to be a pretty good deal if you visit the park twice or more. The waterfall is beautiful and the view from the top is breathtaking. I'm 6 mo. pregnant and I suggest taking the shuttle to Bear Lake and hike to Alberta Falls. This is a longer route yet down hill. After visiting the falls which is awesome! Take a lunch and enjoy the view I went to the top of the falls the boulders make nice steps, wear grippy hiking shoes. Then hike downhill to Glacier Gorge parking lot and pick up the shuttle there. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
