Summary: Start hiking East towards the saddle. When you get to the saddle head South towards the peak. You are scrambling up and over Lava Rock. When you get to the top you will find a cairn with a sign in book. The views are breathtaking for 360*. Looking WestNorthWest is Frenchman Mountain. Also the views of Lake Mead & Lake Las Vegas are great. I have done this 3 or 4 times now. Trailhead: From the intersection of Lake Mead Blvd & Nellis Blvd, follow Lake Mead 8.9 miles & turn right on a gravel road across from a sign that reads "Lake Mead Remediation Area". Drive 0.8 miles & take the left fork for 1.5 miles & make another left. Drive 1.7 miles & make a right that heads for the tall mountain (Lava Butte). Drive 1.2 miles make another left and drive 3.0 miles & park at the Electric Tower. The tower has a yellow sticker on it with the numbers 292-4 which you can see when you park. That is the tower I parked at. They are building a lot of new towers so the road is very well packed. This Mountain sits by itself out their and you will see lots of lava rock. I approached it from the NE for a gentler way up to the ridge. Various ways to get down. I hiked this today (12/31/06) and it is a great scrambling hike as David says. The views from the summit are simply stunning. I look forward to doing this again sometime. I highly recommend this hike! Definitely do when it's cool. The directions here are spot on. This is the same hike with the name Great Scrambling Route. I was trying to edit the name and it just put it in as a new hike. Sorry. It is a great hike and not really that hard. Not a summer hike as it's way to HOT out their. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
