Summary: You will be traveling trails 2&3 on your map. This hike is a personal favorite. I love this kind of country, flat open areas interrupted by stands of oak trees. There is lots of wildlife and I have seen deer on every visit as well as hawks, armadillos, one very large lizard (18-24 inches) and snakes. This hike is completely flat but does have some tricky parts to the trail. Watch your step in certain areas as there are lots of loose rock to sprain an ankle on. I just feel like I am alone and away from civilization on this hike maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much. One tricky part to watch out for is the trail on the map seems to lead to the campground area where you must then pick up the trail again after passing a few campsites. This is wrong, when you get to the picnic area and stock tank look right behind the hitching post for the trail. Also after this point watch for the impressive large old oak trees that must be 100 years old.
Trailhead: After paying your daily fee and getting a map from the Headquarters look to your right before pulling away. You should see a dirt/gravel road right cross from the HQ. Take this to the end and park. You should be able to see the trailhead from your vehicle. (Lat:29.85242 Lon:-98.50143)

Went on an early May afternoon, overcast sky. Pleasant hike, but where were all the deer, armadillos, lizards and snakes? I guess they only come out for Kevin. Or maybe my hiking partner and I were talking too loudly, and they stayed hidden. I'll admit we were looking downward all the time to keep from stumbling on rocks, as this is a very rock-laden trail. Enjoyed the day, though.

Wish I would have read your review before hiking. I ended up spraining an ankle....LOL. I should know better. Anyway, great hike, relatively flat but lots of scenery. I would do it again.
