Gunsight - Siberia Creek Trail

Highlights:

Meadows, rock outcroppings, running creek, views
Near:Big Bear Lake, CA
Scenery:
Distance:3 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:500 ft
Hike Time:1.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a great area in the San Bernardinos. Unfortunately, the Nature Conservancy has blocked off access to Bluff Lake (you need a permit to enter) but you can still visit the Champion Lodgepole Pine and the gunsight.

The Champ sits right off the trail, so if you are just planning to go to the gunsight, you may as well stop in on this very old tree (by So Cal standards, anyway.)

The gunsight isn't really all that spectacular, which is perhaps why this trail isn't really traveled very much. You can take it all the way into Siberia Creek Camp, but your hike out is all uphill. This hike loses 500' in elevation and gains it pretty steadily.

Still, you can get some really nice views and solitude for an easily accessible trail.

Trailhead: From Boulder Bay follow the 18 east to Tulip Lane and merge onto Mill Creek Road. Mill Creek Road becomes 2N10. Follow it past other turnoffs, and after a few miles you will see signs that say Champion Lodgepole. Follow these signs until you reach the trailhead.

I would recommend a high clearance vehicle, but 4 wheel drive is not a necessity.

Follow 1W11 near the Champion Lodgepole Pine and continue on the Siberia Creek Trail until you see a sign that says the trail is not maintained beyond this point. (Lat:34.21315 Lon:-116.98625)

Before today, I haven't been up for about 10 years. It's VERY dry up there now. Meadows are quite brown and many of the ferns are as well. That said, this is one of my favorite hikes. A bit of a drive to get up here. Great biking, too!

A very nice trail. a cougar has been spotted halfway between the Lodgepole pine trailhead and the lodgepole pine.

I went Wed Sep 13, 06 and could not reach trailhead due to water over road that I didn't care to test. You can park on the road and walk about 10 minutes to trailhead, but please don't park in the one good turnaround spot by the water.

My wife and I like this hike very much. We have taken this hike twice with our two dogs. Most recently we were out there Labor Day Weekend (2006). Both times we found some shade and water. There is even a spot where the dogs can take a little swim to cool off (in September). Both times we were on the trail there were not many other people. Perhaps it's because you have to drive a couple miles on a fire road. Any car with a little ground clearance should be fine. We have a 2006 Saturn Vue, which is more car than truck, and we had no trouble getting there. The first trip out there in July we saw a couple deer off the fire road.
