Summary: This loop hike is great if you are looking to get out for the day but relax more than hike. The hike will take you down into the Blackriver as well as along Trout and Rhinehart Brook, Hemlock Ravines and mature hardwood forests. The trails are wide and have gravel put down. If you want that challenge there are a few trails along the Black River that are more like hiking trails, narrow and rocky. This hike will take you through both trail types. Along the trails you will pass many benches and picnic areas. There are also old water fountains along the way that where built by the Civilian Conservation Cor, during the depression. They no longer work though. The trails are all unmarked but will be getting marked in the next year. The best time to hike the area is during the week when you will only encounter fly fisherman. Weekends tend to get crowded. Trailhead: Take Rt. 206 south into Chester. Then make a right onto rt. 24 West. Go about a mile and make a left onto State Park Rd. Take State Park Rd until you hit Hacklebarney Rd. . Make right onto Hacklebarney Rd and park entrance will be on right about a mile down. My favorite is the semi-rugged terrain along the Black River. Yesterday I observed two people on the opposite side of Black River attempting to get back across. One of them slipped into water up to their chest and tossed their toy dog into the quick current/rapids. The dog took on a good amount of water before finally making it out. I was a little angry at her for being an idiot until I found out she lost her camera in the river. Hey lady, next time use your common sense and wear more than flip-flops on a hiking trail. Just came back from Hacklebarney State Park. Today is the day before Memorial Day and though there were plenty of people it wasn't crowded by my standards (although I don't hike very often). It was very pleasant and scenic. Plenty of picnic tables along the trails (we did about two trails, or somehow jumped from blue to red) and my dog (beagle) enjoyed this trek through the woods as well. I would definitely go again after some more reasearch to see if there are other trails (I know there is white one which we didn't get to). Went there yesterday with a group of 5 kids and our dog; it was well worth the experience. Be aware, though, that the ideal parking is not on Hacklebarney rd (State park rd is the one you want, I think; there are road signs). There were a fair number of people fishing for trout (some successfully) and quite few few people like us with kids/dog in tow. Very picturesque and mild hiking - highly recommended. As someone wrote previously, there are farms with bakeries etc. in the area if you want to grab a snack. Had fun with the family and dog here today (Sept 07). Nice day and it was crowded. There is a playground here which gave us a good stop for my 6 year old. One beef: no trail maps remaining at the trail head, would have had more fun if I could have planned a route. Just hiked the park this weekend and enjoyed it very much. It's a great hike to bring your dog on. Thumbs up and good for beginners, with well blazed trails. The Mapquest and Google directions are very confusing once you get off the main highways, so beware and plan ahead! The trails were great and the right amount of challenge, variety and scenery for the beginner hiker. The trails followed along running water, which was really relaxing to hike along side. Loved that there were at least three bathroom options along the trails. Enjoy! Very nice for the beginner hikers. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
