Summary: This loop hike is great if you are looking to get out for the day but relax more than hike. The hike will take you down into the Blackriver as well as along Trout and Rhinehart Brook, Hemlock Ravines and mature hardwood forests. The trails are wide and have gravel put down. If you want that challenge there are a few trails along the Black River that are more like hiking trails, narrow and rocky. This hike will take you through both trail types. Along the trails you will pass many benches and picnic areas. There are also old water fountains along the way that where built by the Civilian Conservation Cor, during the depression. They no longer work though. The trails are all unmarked but will be getting marked in the next year. The best time to hike the area is during the week when you will only encounter fly fisherman. Weekends tend to get crowded.
Trailhead: Take Rt. 206 south into Chester. Then make a right onto rt. 24 West. Go about a mile and make a left onto State Park Rd. Take State Park Rd until you hit Hacklebarney Rd. . Make right onto Hacklebarney Rd and park entrance will be on right about a mile down. (Lat:40.4431 Lon:-74.4405)

Went on 7/17/10 and it was a very nice sunny day. We followed the red trail clockwise. There are many amazing stops along the river banks to take breaks and pictures. Bring your swim trunks and enjoy the upper tier small pools on the waterfalls. Once you enter the "rugged" portion of the trail where strollers can go no further, it becomes even more fun. There is a portion of the trail where you have two options: to step on the river rocks and hug the wall over the water or climb up a steep patch of hill. Either way, it was enjoyable. Only frustrating part is when you leave the river. It is a long walk back to the parking lot. Overall, the sounds of the water and the ease of the trail systems were very relaxing.

Very nice hike with my dog. Very scenic. But they were out of trail map which made the hike a little confusing. We basically just wondered around. Would've been nice to know where we were.

Took my two adult daughters there yesterday for Mother's Day. It's a beautiful spot, and not too difficult, which allows for conversation and relaxation. Great views for photogs.

My all time favorite park, go here often and keep finding new beauty. Easy trails to walk/hike with some slightly hidden ones that keep it interesting. Plenty of waterfalls and river views, great for photography! I go year-round, each season renews the views. It can get a bit busy during the nice weather-season, but even at the height of the season you can still find some secluded spots.

This is just to note that the gps coordinates given seem incorrect. I think they should be in the neighborhood of (40.751, -74.737). The author may have meant to indicate minutes instead of decimals but that would still put you down on Black River Road somewhere...

Hi, I went there with my wife and 18 months old daughter.I was really looking for a place near home to hike with family. The views are wonderful, morning voices of the jungle, fresh air and the river side.It was really fun.The best part was that i could use the stroller for a major part of the loop.Had to return once the rugged part started along the black river.Overall, very enjoable place to picnic and take your family(with small kids)

I often take my two pooches along for a "speed hike" around the 3 mile loop. My favorite is the semi-rugged terrain along the Black River. Yesterday I observed two people on the opposite side of Black River attempting to get back across. One of them slipped into water up to their chest and tossed their toy dog into the quick current/rapids. The dog took on a good amount of water before finally making it out. I was a little angry at her for being an idiot until I found out she lost her camera in the river. Hey lady, next time use your common sense and wear more than flip-flops on a hiking trail.
