Summary: This loop hike is great if you are looking to get out for the day but relax more than hike. The hike will take you down into the Blackriver as well as along Trout and Rhinehart Brook, Hemlock Ravines and mature hardwood forests. The trails are wide and have gravel put down. If you want that challenge there are a few trails along the Black River that are more like hiking trails, narrow and rocky. This hike will take you through both trail types. Along the trails you will pass many benches and picnic areas. There are also old water fountains along the way that where built by the Civilian Conservation Cor, during the depression. They no longer work though. The trails are all unmarked but will be getting marked in the next year. The best time to hike the area is during the week when you will only encounter fly fisherman. Weekends tend to get crowded.
Trailhead: Take Rt. 206 south into Chester. Then make a right onto rt. 24 West. Go about a mile and make a left onto State Park Rd. Take State Park Rd until you hit Hacklebarney Rd. . Make right onto Hacklebarney Rd and park entrance will be on right about a mile down. (Lat:40.4431 Lon:-74.4405)

The Mapquest and Google directions are very confusing once you get off the main highways, so beware and plan ahead! The trails were great and the right amount of challenge, variety and scenery for the beginner hiker. The trails followed along running water, which was really relaxing to hike along side. Loved that there were at least three bathroom options along the trails. Enjoy!

My husband and I are beginner hikers. This was our first hike together. We travelled the loop on Thursday, May 24, 2007. We had a picnic lunch on a rock near the falls, we hiked along the narrow rocky path along the water down to the Black River and then climbed up the steep hill during our return to the parking lot. There were plenty of benches to stop and rest. We only ran into one or two people along the way. The loop was easy to navigate, fun, and the views were gorgeous. After the loop, we went into Chester and shopped. I highly recommend this hike!!

Hacklebarney is amazing! We did this hike over Memorial Day Weekend. The bottom of the gorge is cool and refreshing at any time of year. The dog loved it. This is a great easy hike for beginners, with just a few rocky sections.

My wife and I tried these trails as our entry into hiking. While not very demanding, the scenery is great. We hiked the white - blue - red then back to blue. Took us right along the water which was amazing. Will definietly try this one again.

Very nice trail! It offers a very diverse array of difficulty -- if you want easy, there's all hard-packed trails that are moderately wide and with few bumps. If you want moderately difficult, there are rock trails marked with a dotted-red line on the trail map that requires some climbing, but not much. If you want more difficult, simply make your own path along side the rock trails. It can be as difficult as you want. I set my own trail where I hopped rock-to-rock down a brook. Also, there are many scattered park benches and picnic areas throughout the park -- some overlooking water cascades. Very pleasant place!
