Half Moon Pass

>

Highlights:

Hike in the Holy Cross wilderness with views of Mt Holy Cross and some 13ers.
Near:Minturn, CO
Scenery:
Distance:4.3 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1600 ft
Hike Time:3 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trailhead is at the Southwest end of the parking lot. Sign in before beginning your hike at the register. Follow the obvious path as it works its way up the East side of the ridge. Just before reaching the pass you will begin to break through treeline. Be sure to look behind you as the views to the East are beautiful too. Once you reach the pass you will be able to see Mount Jackson and Grouse Mountain. Mt Jackson is frequently mistaken for Mount of the Holy Cross, but you must continue down the trail for another half mile to get a good view of Holy Cross. It will appear to your left as you hike down the trail. After Holy Cross comes into view, for an easy hike I recommend that you turn back here as the trail gets steeper and loses a lot of elevation as it descends into the valley below.
Trailhead: From I-70 take exit 171 into the town of Minturn on Highway 24. 5 miles after exiting I-70 there will be a sign on the right for Tigiwon Road. (The turn is just before a couple of large switchbacks on highway 24) Follow this road to the very end for the trailhead. This road is rough, but most any passenger car can make it. Just take your time. (Lat:39.5005 Lon:-106.43304)
