Summary: This is a very enjoyable, but somewhat strenuous hike located near the picturesque town of Ojai. The trail starts out along the banks of beautiful Thatcher Creek, with several crossings, then heads upwards almost 1800 feet to a shady pine studded campsite with spectacular views. Recommended. Trailhead: Take highway 33 north from highway 101 in Ventura. Stay on Highway 33 until it turns off from highway 150. Then bear right and take Highway 150 (Ojai Ave.) east through the city. Once outside town, turn left on Reeves road. Follow Reeves about a mile to McAndrew Road and make another left, following the signs for Thatcher School. Another mile up the road, take the road into the school grounds. Stay to the right and follow the signs to the gymkhana field. Park near the fire gate at the trailhead. The trail is Rocky in parts, and there is a lot of horse droppings at the beginning, or there was the day I went. I didn't run into the fly problem others did, and it was such a clear day we could see all the way to the islands. This was a fun hike, would definately do it again, if you make it to the pines, and I recomend you do, they are beautiful, and not as far away as you would think, don't give up, its worth it!! This was a great hike. Starts off with a nice gradual incline that continues to increase, at the top I found the pine flats very refreshing after the steep hike up. No dodgy characters on my trip, thank goodness. No black flys either, although I did use bug spray before I set off. My dog loved the stream crossings and I loved the views; I was able to see Santa Cruz and Anacapa islands it was such a clear day. Just beautiful. I will definitely be back. I liked the hike very much!! There were many beautiful places to stop and take pictures and five star videos. I would recommend this hike to people who like to feel accomplished at the end of a great hike. Bye Bye now!!! Great Hike, there were quite a few hikers, my friend got nervous due to some sketchy looking guys camping up at the pine flats. I just think they were on spring break, maybe smoking some whackie tabbaccy. No flys at this time. Both of our calve muscles were sore for a week after this hike. Great Hike! Just got back from Horn on horseback. This is a rocky terrain and requires an experienced rider with a good trail horse. The earth stairs are challenging on the way up and moreso on the way down by horseback. The trail gets narrow in some areas so a sure footed and athletic horse is essential. The scenery was awesome, the river crossings are running pretty deep right now so you need a horse that doesn't mind jumping right in. Overall it was a great time and good conditioning for horse and rider. I went on this hike with my girl friend (two words) who was tormented by dozens of kamakazi black flies that went for her ears and hair and neck, places usually reserved for me. Their attacks increased as we reached The Pines Campground and she almost wigged out and flung herself down the hill. Strangely, they didnt really come after me, perhaps I attract higher beings. If you can ignore the flies, it is a strenuous but pretty hike with a lot of wildflowers and vistas. A few river crossings are pretty as well. Wouldn't do it again because of the flies though. Absent the thousands of predatorial, vicious, bloodthirsty biting flies, the hike was great. But I spent so much of my time plugging my ears so that they wouldn't burrow down to my eardrums--that I wasn't able to devote enough time to enjoying the scenery. Great exercise though. Wonderful spring hike with lots of wild flowers and fun with kids stream hopping and at the gorge! Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
