Summary: At the end of Lk Riconda Drive, take the white blazed Horsepond Mtn Trail. It climbs a mountain, crosses powerlines (with a decent view if you don't mind the lines) then joins the Highlands Trail (Blue diamond blazes). Continue on the co-aligned Horse Pond Mtn/Highlands trail. Together they descend into a valley, cross a stream with a series of small waterfalls, then turn north and climb sharply to a nice view. From there the route pretty much follows the ridgeline, with the blue blazed Hewitt-Butler trail joining from the left, then it descends to the shore of Monksville Reservoir. The Horsepond Mtn trail ends, so follow the co-aligned Highlands and Hewitt Butler Trail to Greenwood Lake Tpk. From there its about 100 yards to car you left there. Trailhead: This is an end to end hike so a car must be left at both ends To leave Car A (end point). Take Route 287 to Skyline Drive exit. Take Skyline Drive to end and make a right onto Greenwood Lake Tpk. Follow Greenwood, past Long Pond Ironworks and just after it, is a parking area (left side) at the junction of Greenwood Lk Tpk and East Shore Rd. From there take Car B back the way you came on Greenwood Lk Tpk. Make your first right onto Stonetown Rd, go about 2 miles and make a right onto Lk Riconda Dr. Park and begin hike at end of Lk Riconda Dr. (Lat:41.11295 Lon:-74.30553) Trail Guides for Horsepond Mountain: New Jersey Walk Book by NY/NJ Trail Conference (NY/NJ Trail Conference) Best Seasons: Year-Round User Groups: Hikers, Dogs, Ranger Contact: NJ Div of Parks and Forestry 973-962-2242 Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Brian Sniatkowski, who has posted 38 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Submit your own review Nice hike, still relatively undiscovered. A couple of alternates are also worth considering: 1) encircle Monksville Reservoir using Highlands Trail, Hasenclever Trail, Big Beech Rd and walking over the dam on Stonetown Rd., approx 11 miles. 2) Short loop hike of Horse Pond Mtn and Long Hill overlooking Jungle Habitat: From Rt. 511 go 1.5 mi. to yellow Burnt Meadow Trail, follow west to Hewitt Butler Trail (views up above, off trail). Right on HB to right on Highlands Trail to Horse Pond Mtn. Right on Burnt Meadow downhill to complete loop. Both peaks are part of West Milford Baker's Dozen Challenge (www.weishike.com).
