Summary: This hike starts off on Soderberg trail with a steady climb without tree cover up a set of switchbacks. It levels off about 1/4 mile up and takes you deep into Horsetooth Mtn Park. The trail is well maintained and wide open the first mile or so but branches off w/another trail, Audra Culver, and gets into some tree cover. Great rock formations along the way w/excellent views of the eastern plains of Colorado and Fort Collins. Trail gets more narrow farther into the hike, following a dried up creek bed under the shade of Ponderosa pines. As you start to level off again you come to Horsetooth rock trail. Take this trail and it leads you to the base of the rock. The trail does get a bit more difficult but the views are well worth it. Once at the rock, there is some bouldering required to get to the top. Those not wanting to climb the rock can enjoy the hike just as much from what the hike up has to offer. Trailhead: Get on Harmony Rd. in Fort Collins and go west. This turns into CR 38e. Follow this road around Horsetooth resevoir until you get to Horsetooth Mountain Park. Entrance and parking is on the right hand side. I did the whole thing, including the bouldering to the top, round trip in 1 1/2 hours. I was walking fast and jogging the flat parts. I was moving quickly but it can be done in 2 hours without running. Great views at the top. This is a must do at sunrise. Get there early, plan to be at the top 10 mintues before sun rise....it is worth it. You will need head lamps to make the hike in the morning (you can buy a cheap on at Wallgreens on Drake and Taft Hill for $13.99) but it is an easy hike to do with the head lamps, plus it is very cool in the morning. Great view. Did this hike on 7/3/2010 as a part of family reunion..we are not hikers, and some of us are from Florida. so yes we took many breaks, but the views were beautiful, took lots of pics. The younger ones did climb to the top, and the rest stayed at the base. I would do this hike again in cooler weather we started at 7:30 and finished at 11:30. great family time.. We my husband and I took our three grandchildren for the hike. We are 73 and they are 9-12-17. The two younger ones live in Fort Collins but the 17 year old and us are from Ohio so we are not used to the air up there. We all did well and made it to the top. What a view.....We had lots of water and packed a lunch. Good day with family. My husband and I would definitely qualify as novices hikers but were able to complete the hike, including the bouldering at the top. Spectacular view. 3 hours is probably accurate if you're from an area at sea level. Had to stop frequently to breathe. I did this hike last weekend, it was nice, it took about 3 hours. It has just few spots with a bit of ice, but it was excellent. I just did this hike with a friend yesterday (2/6/10). I am a novice and it was strenuous at some points and there is still some ice to manuever around. But once we reached the top, the view was incredible. It took us a little less than 2 1/2 hrs. up and down, we started around 3 pm and were driving home by 5:30. I'll be doing it again soon. It takes some extra effort to get to the top where tooth is but the views are incredible and completly worth it. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
