Summary: The Knife edge is very rugged in places - the chimney is almost a technical climb. The Baxter peak side of the knife edge is a boulder scramble. The gap between Pamola and Chimney peaks can be very challenging because it is very steep and many of the rocks you have to climb up lean in towards the gap. These can be very dangerous in wet weather. Proper equipment and experience are a requirement. This hike should not be taken lightly and you should listen to the rangers. There is not much help around if you run into trouble. Trailhead: The knife edge can be accessed from either Baxter or Pamola peak. It can take several hours to cross the knife edge if you are not nimble on your feet. To get the the knife edge you first must climb one of the peaks. MY FRIENDS AND I DID KATAHDIN ON 11 AUG 1967 recommend not trying katahdin during a good old maine noreaster, at least not unless you are pretty good at ice axe arrest. speaking of arrest, bolholniihii bless all stolen copper is katahdin any easier from the side taken by the author of walden pond than from the east? Wow! this was a great acomplishment for me. thank you. August 14, 2007 Very challenging climb since I approached via the Dudley Trail. The Chimney was almost all that I could handle at my age and overcame fear of verticality in order to complete. Once completed, I was very satisfied that I did for the experience and would contemplate a second attempt if physycally able too. This is not a trail/climb that is for the neophyte and you should have good hiking shoes and be prepared for wind and temperature changes toward the top. The weather on Aug 14, was almost ideal but I could see where weather could play into this hike. Thanks for the experience. listen to the park rangers. we didn't and got caught on knife edge by weather. heavy rain, sleet, 50-60mph winds almost zero visibility. 2 1/2 hrs. to crawl 1.1 miles. they warned us to stay below tree line.
