Summary: This hike is notable not only for its shopping opportunities, but also for the variety of scenic wonders it passes in 2 short miles. You'll see a sheltered beach where seals and beach-goers are learning to live together, pass protected underwater reserves, and wander along the tops of sheer bluffs that tower over La Jolla Cove. And then there's the shopping.... As a special treat, stop in for a visit to Sunny Jim Cave, whose opening bears the resemblance of a 1920's cartoon character "Sunny Jim". Trailhead: 6 miles North of I-8/I-5 intersection from San Diego, take Rt 52 W (Ardath Rd). Follow for 1.5 miles, then turn right Prospect Street. Follow Prospect St 1 mile to Cuvier Street. Parking may be a challenge, especially during busy summer days. Reviewed by Viewer on 1/19/2006 its not really so much a hike, as it is a scenery trail. Not vigorous, smells like fish, but very beautiful as you are at the cove.
Reviewed by Jesse on 4/8/2005 Definitely not for someone seeking solitude! Usually very crowded, especially on the weekends. Parking is tough to come by, but the adorable seals are well worth the hassle. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
