Summary: I've heard stories that this cabin was used by outlaws, miners, cowboys (line shack), and drifters. Since there are abandoned mines above, and this canyon was used for livestock, there's probably some truth to all the stories. The origin and use of the cabin is probably not as interesting as hiking up & discovering it yourself. This trail might be a little steep for children, and is not maintained regularly. You'll cross the creek bed several times so beware of both slippery rocks and erosion. You can continue this trail beyond the cabin and eventually to La Madre ridge and peak, or just hike up and explore until you get tired. Be sure and leave some energy for the descent, it can be steep and treacherous. Although this cabin sees frequent use - for picnic & overnight (see park staff about primitive camp permit), most people respect the historic artifacts and remnants lying around. Please do not remove or disturb anything -- it is protected and is illegal to take. Trailhead: 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave. (SR 159) to Red Rock entry (fee) station. Take 13 mile scenic loop to Willow Springs Picnic Area. Park and head W up gravel road (Rocky Gap road, 4WD), approx. 3/4 mile, turn right (N) at SIGN. Follow this gravel road (which will also take you to White Rock Hills) NNE approx. 1/4 mile to the SIGN (and 3 boulders on R side of road), continue PAST this sign and stay on the main gravel road (trail) to the L as you walk up into La Madre Canyon. In addition to the Willow Springs Picnic Area, you can also park at Lost Creek before you reach Willow Springs, or beyond Willow Springs to a few dirt pullouts along Rocky Gap Road. This trail is a little narrow & steep for horses, but mules & seasoned stock can make it, single track. Horses trailers should park outside the park along SR160 (look for corral at scenic loop road EXIT) & ride up the lower canyons (Pine Creek and Red Rock washes) to reach La Madre area. Made it to the cabin, that was cool. Next, to the copper mine. This is a great trail, offering an escape from the valley heat in summer. I've seen a lot of platics in the water and beside the trail. Please, if you can carry it in, you can carry it out! Also, Kat's altitude is aggressive. A GPS will put you around 5,710 - 5,740ft at the cabin. In summer, take more water than you think you'll need. Plus, I like to have a cooler stocked with cold water waiting in the car for the ride home. There's plenty of wildlife for the viewing. So far this June, I've seen 2 species of frogs, tadpoles, and young mountain lion, countless birds, and a ground squirrel. I heard from other hikers on this trail reports of sheep as well. Please heed Kat's warning about slippery rocks, and you'll have a rewarding exper Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
