Summary: We left Silvermine Lake in less then a foot of hard packed snow following the Menomine Trail. It led us around the lake and up to the William Brien Shelter and the crossings of the Appalachian, Ramapo-Dunderberg, and Dean Trails. Tracks were abundant, deer and rabbit. We left the shelter on the Dean Trail following a stream running rabidly with all the melting snow. We caught the Red Cross Trail which led us through a quiet valley between Letterrock & Flaggey Meadow mtns. Along the way, we ran across an interesting set of tracks - bobcat! We rounded Letterrock Mtn, looking for the unmarked Bokey Swamp Trail, but it was still covered with snow and we were unable to find it. So out came the compasses and the map and we bushwhacked over Letterrock mtn. The views from the top were incredible, You could even see the Hudson River to the north! The blue skies were filled with hawks - our only companions on the summit. We bushwhacked along the Bokey Swamp back to the shelter Trailhead: Parked At The Silvermine Parking Area (Lat:41.29455 Lon:-74.06087) Trail Guides for LetterRock Mtn Loop: Harriman Trails: A Guide & History by William J Myles (NY/NJ Trail Confrence) Best Seasons: Year-Round User Groups: Hikers, Ranger Contact: Park Police = 845-786-2781 Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Brian Walter, who has posted 10 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Submit your own review Walked a similar route. Beautiful and a little challenging for novices. I agree, the view of the hudson (fron Goshen Mt) is little known, but quite sublime. Red cross trail liks up with a nice grassy lumber trail acros the road from flaggy meadow. Goes either to Lake welch or out to 7 lakes drive, where you can head back to tiorati circle. Also, there is an unmarked trail that branches off the dean trail near that very stream near the rock outcroppings where the two meet.(red cross and dean) Goes out to silver mine or baqck to tiorati brook road by the lake close to the circle. Try the Long Path off the hiker area on route 6w. Nice climb to summit, about 900ft. What a view! Havent been to the shelter in yrs,-then named letterrrock.
