Great Basin NP - Lexington Arch

Highlights:

Giant Natural Limestone Arch, secluded trail, abandoned cabin
Near:Baker, NV
Scenery:
Distance:4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1200 ft
Hike Time:3 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is short, yet not an easy trail. You climb an exposed Pinyon and shrub slope, which is hot and unshaded even when the sky is cloudy. The trail itself is not well maintained with overgrowth crowding onto the trail. you may want to wear pants on this one. You climb over 1000' feet in a very short distance, and with the sun out, it can be very taxing.

Once you get above 8100' feet, you enter a fir/pine forest and the trail becomes covered with duff. A small side path reaches an overlook where you get a commanding view of the arch. From there, you can continue onto the arch (recommended), but the trail is pretty steep going, so watch your footing.

Looking up and through the arch is great fun and worth any trip.

Note: The topo map shows the trail following the canyon. While this would make more sense, you actually switchback up the hill instead of climbing through the canyon. Perhaps the overgrowth was too much for this lesser used trail.

Trailhead: To get to Great Basin NP - take the 15 north from Vegas. Then Head north on the 93. Follow it through a vast expanse for hundreds of miles to the junction for Major's Place, then turn right/east towards Baker on the 6/50. Head into the mountains. Turn south/right on the 487 and follow it until it turns into the Utah 21. At mile marker 6, there is a signed dirt road to the right for Lexington Arch. Follow the signs 12 miles to the parking lot.

While a high clearance vehicle is recommended, as long as you are not in a low rider, you will be able to make this one. Along the route is an abandoned cabin, and you will most likely find the road and the trail deserted. This one is out of the way and underused.

From Cedar City, Utah, take the 15 north to the 21 west. Follow it to Great Basin NP, mile marker 6 - turn left. (Lat:38.84393 Lon:-114.20834)
