Summary: This is one of the best year round trails in the Spring Mountains. Whether enjoying autumn's multi-hued colors, glistening snow on the peaks and canyons of winter and early spring, or the colorful wildflowers blooming along the trail in the summertime; this trail truly has something for everyone. The climb up this trail is so gradual, and has wonderful views to distract you so you won't even realize you've walked 3 miles by the time you reach the signed junction with the Bonanza trail. If you prefer the isolation of a more forested trail with more of a challenge, take the Bonanza trail (no bikes allowed) as far as you are able (13 mi. from junction to Cold Creek, one way), with wonderful views of surrounding peaks and into the seldom viewed Clark canyon and Wheeler pass area. As nice as the lower Bristlecone is, you won't escape the noises of traffic, generators, and children's voices from nearby Dolomite or McWilliams CG. Nice meadows for picnicking before TH/pkg.
Trailhead: I-15 N from Las Vegas to 95 N towards Reno, W on SR 156 (Lee Canyon) approx. 16 miles into Lee Canyon to just before McWilliams CG (signed turn to R) to a nice gravel parking area & TH (back you horse trailer in when you arrive, pkg gets full by afternoon). This trail is described herein as an out and back for the lower Bristlecone only, but it's also a nice 6.2 mi. as a loop by doing lower & upper Bristlecone (walk along pavement from ski area down to beginning). The (abandoned WPA road) lower Bristlecone is also known as Scout Canyon Rd, and is the Lee Canyon access for the Bonanza Trail - bikes can do the upper/lower loop, but are not allowed on Bonanza trail. Horses, hikers & dogs can continue on the Bonanza trail which eventually goes all the way to Cold Creek. Horse trailers might find it easier to park along the main road across from the meadows, before the turn for the trailhead/parking. Look for wild horse herd grazing on the ski area slopes & in meadows. (Lat:36.31119 Lon:-115.67717)
