Lower Norvin Green Loop

Highlights:

Norvin Green Park, Mines & Old homestead
Near:Ringwood, NJ
Scenery:
Distance:3.6 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1200 ft
Hike Time:2.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Loop

Summary: I followed the Mine Trail from the Parking Area along the Mine Falls and to the Roomey Mine. The trail was muddy and in some spots flooded, from all the snow melt. The Mine itself was still packed with snow, so I continued along past the Blue Mine and began to climb Carris Hill, steeply in some parts. I reached the Wyanokie Circular Trail which lead along the ridge then into a valley between Carris Hill and Buck Mtn. Here spring was trying to take over, and a few trees were sprouting green buds. I reached the Otter Hole trail and followed it as it ran along a raging brook. I passed many spectacular seasonal waterfalls. I came across the remains of an old house, a nice one, set along side the brook with a large planting area in front of it. All that remained now were the cellar foundations, some stone steps to the brook and the well. The Otter Hole trail ran past large boulders with many small caves on the ridges above it.
Trailhead: These trails are located in the Norvin Green State Forest in Northeast New Jersey. I parked at the Weiss Ecology Center on Snake Den Rd which is next to the park. You can take NJ's Skyline Drive to Rt 511 and West Brook Rd. Take time to visit the Ecology Center - a fantastic place with incredible outdoor educational programs! (Lat:41.07006 Lon:-74.32211)
