Summary: The hike to Maggies Glen from the North Trailhead in Oak Mtn State Park is an excellent hike for beginners or for a family that wants to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. This particular hike should only take an hour or two. On this hike I parked at the North Trailhead and walked a couple of hundred yards up the North Trailhead to the sign which marks the direction to Maggies Glen. I followed the white trail towards Maggies Glen. The hike at this point is fairly level and quite relaxing. After travelling approximately a mile (the midpoint of the hike) you will be rewarded by reaching Maggies Glen. The Glen offers a great point to stop and rest. The Glen has benches which were built by a Boy Scout for his Eagle Scout project and has a lovely stream which produces very relaxing sounds as it flows over rocks in the area. After sitting and listening to the stream for a few minutes, I finished my hike by taking the Yellow Trail at the Glen which led me back to my starting point. Trailhead: To reach the North Trailhead in Oak Mtn State Park travel I-65 to Cahaba Valley Road (Exit 246). Follow the signs to Oak Mtn State Park. You will travel State Park Road to the entrance of Oak Mtn State Park. Once entering Oak Mtn State Park, follow John Findley Drive approximately 2-3 miles until you see the North Trailhead on your right. A parking area is provided directly across the entrance to the North Trailhead. The trail is smooth enough that I see many runners on this trail enjoying being out in the wilderness. This one is good if you want to get outside but just cannot handle a steep trail. For those people hike in and out on just the white trail. The yellow part does have some steep parts. Another great out-and-back hike is to continue from Maggie's Glen across the creek on the Yellow Trail to Tranquility Lake. You will walk partially around a crystal clear lake to a wonderfully made dam. In the winter, and after heavy rains, the water runs hard over the dam. Very serene and calming. Hike back for a round trip of a little more than 4 miles. Easy hike. No challenging hills. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
