Manoa Falls

Highlights:

Lovely shaded hike through lush tropical rainforest.
Near:Honolulu, HI
Scenery:
Distance:2 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:600 ft
Hike Time:1.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is an excellent and leisurely hike. It does get steep in places but nothing that an average hiker can't handle. Wear hiking boots due to the fact that it is a rainforest and the ground can be slippery. Watch for beautiful flowers and mini waterfalls on your way up. The bamboo forest is an awe to look at. People insist on etching their names in the bamboo trunks and the earliest date I found was 1974. The trail is graded and well maintained, however there are spots that are unmaintained so always make sure you have a good footing. The plant life is immense, I have no doubt that anyone could get excellent pictures for their photo album. On the way there it is up hill and on the wayback is downhill. Just before reaching the waterfall, a brief boulder climb is required. It's not too hard since I took my two year old and wife with me on this hike. They had a blast!
Trailhead: Head out West Manoa Road which is just north of Honolulu and west of pacific cemetary. Drive to the end and you will find the starting and ending point. (Lat:21.34319 Lon:-157.79808)

You are totally right - this reporter is WAY off with his information. See: http://www.backyardoahu.com/mnoa1.htm

I live less than a mile away from the trailhead, and I have walked up to Manoa Falls many times. I would like to amend the review by Chad. It is not near Pearl City; it is right in the middle of Honolulu. The elevation gain is slight, no where near 1600 feet! I doubt if it is more than 200 ft. This easy hike starts at the very end of Manoa Road. (On a map of Honolulu, this is east of Punchbowl Cemetery.) I share Chad's enthusiasm for the beauty of the hike. The trail has been upgraded recently due to an increase in visitors. However, you are not able to swim in the pool at the base of the falls any more. Due to mudslide concerns, you have to stop a few yards before reaching the falls, and view them from a safe distance.

It is the perfect quick hike. I believe it is 0.9mi each direction. The waterfall is 200ft. and spectacular on a rainy day in August. There is also a wide variety of local plant life. Also, it is worth noting, before one reaches the waterfall there is a trail head to the left that leads to a switch-back to the Pauoa flats. There is a complex network of trails in the flats area that takes the hiker to a ridge overlooking the Pali Highway and around the "Tantilus" peak (west side of Manoa valley). Several other trails intersect in that area. It is easy to get lost in this area if you do not have a good map.
