Summary: This hike is great for dogs. In unincorporated Jefferson County, there is a leash law. There were, however, lots of happy dogs on the trail. Plenty of tree shade along the way. A good portion of the trail has a creek running along side. Great for the dogs and the "stop to smell the roses" hikers. There is a nice view at the falls. A great place to sit and relax. Well worth the hike! Trailhead: Travel to Evergreen on rte 74. Take rte 73 about a mile to brook forest rd. Travel about 3.6 miles to a parking lot on your left. Bit confusing, hope this helps. When you come from lower falls trailhead you pass a small lower falls, easy to miss, before bridge. After bridge, there is a sign to continue to upper falls or turn right and go on the Cliff Loop Trail. If you continue to the upper falls, you will find a nice falls on your left (about 1.75 mi. from start). If you continue past the falls, you will eventually come to a marked split (the sign will be behind you) that says Cliff Loop(left)Falls (right, which is the trail you are coming up on). If you continue straight, you will get to the Upper Falls Trailhead. If you want to get to the Upper Falls more quickly, start at Upper Falls Trailhead, you'll get there in about 10 minutes. Enjoy! With the exception of the traffic I dealt with to get there I really enjoyed myself (and I believe my dog did as well). Not incredibly well marked and the falls aren't anything to write home about, but there are some other views that made me say "Wow". A great day trip for someone lookin to get out. Do not make the mistake of assuming that lower maxwell falls trailhead is the same as upper maxwell falls trailhead. You ll be in line for no stream, no falls, and a minimum of a 4 hour walk. Do not go to incorrect trailhead if you are looking for an easy hike. Poorly marked trail & not a loop. A nice walk in the woods. Really enjoyed the trail, got a little confused at the end, we kept exepecting the trail to loop back but it never did, we ended up turning around and talking to some locals. Now we know how the trail works. As for the dogs, we love dogs, but the law is to keep them on a leash. We almost ended our hike before it started, a woman and her dog on a leash headed down the path in front of us. All of a sudden her dog was attacked by three dogs not on a leash. It was a very tense moment as the owner of the three dogs tried to verbally instruct his dogs to stop. They were not in a listening mood. Thats why there are leash laws, not because we hate dogs, but we want to see everyone be able to enjoy the parks and trails. Nothing spectacular but a nice trail. Off leash dogs is a problem in most trails around the Denver metro area. Dog owners must be aware that not everyone like dogs and they must be kept on leash at all times. That is the responsible thing to do. I was approached by several off leash dogs while on the trail. pretty easy hiking, but worth the trip if you like to get out with your dogs and see tons of wildlife. during the spring run off would be the best time to see the falls in their full potential. be adventurous get close and personal to see the main falls hidden by dunage. look for the A-N-E at the top of the falls along with some great camping sites for the seclueded backpacker. ASHLEY-N-EHJAY Very scenic hike. Trailhead information was ambiguous so it was difficult to find the loop. Almost passed by the falls without knowing it before another hiker shared some info. Flora was pretty and insects were rather low. I'm sure the falls are more impressive during runoff. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
