Mill B North Fork Overlooks

Highlights:

Majestic views of the Big Cottonwood Canyon and Salt Lake Valley
Near:Salt Lake City, UT
Scenery:
Distance:4.68 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2030 ft
Hike Time:3 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a sweet hike. The small creek follows the trail for about 1/4 mile at which point, the trail makes a 180 degree turn. From here the climb begins. The climb to the first overlook is mild to moderate and takes 30-45 minutes.

The first overlook offers a majestic view of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Big Cottonwood Creek and the highway can be seen several hundred feet straight down. The Salt Lake Valley can be viewed to the southwest. The rock formations at this overlook provide some nice "seating" to stop and enjoy the view before proceeding futher, or heading back to the trailhead.

For hikers wanting a "nice and easy" hike, the first overlook is the end of the line. Head back the way you came to complete the hike. Those who want a longer, more vigorous hike, re-join the trail and continue. The climb from this point to the second overlook is substantially more difficult, but the views are spectacular. The second overlook is 30-45 minutes from the first.

Trailhead: The Mill B North Fork Trailhead is 4.4 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon just north of the Mill B South Fork Picnic Ground.

Getting to Big Cottonwood Canyon:

Take I-215 South (freeway will become I-215 East) until you reach the 6200 South exit. Turn right onto Wasatch Boulevard, then turn left at Big Cottonwood Canyon. The intersection is clearly signed. You will see a 7-11 store to your right.

From the north or south ends of the valley, take I-15 to I-215 East and follow the directions above.

Getting to the Trailhead:

4.4 miles up the canyon, you will reach an S-Curve (look for the Mill B South signs). Immediately after the first (lower) bend in the S-Curve, there will be a parking lot to the right. From this parking lot, take the stairs up the slope to the north. Cross the road (watch for traffic coming around the curve to your left). Hidden Falls will be directly ahead. The trail for this hike begins on the stairs to the right. (Lat:40.63477 Lon:-111.72413)

Nice hike indeed, although I'm not sure where it ended: after a few hours I reached a fork with a sign pointing left for Porter Fork, and right for Mill A Basin (there also was a sign point back to the Mill B North trailhead). I went left for a few minutes and got a nice view, but I'm not sure if that was the best way to go. Nonetheless, I had a good time.

Nice hike, but car was broken into at the crowded trailhead; police said many others have had this problem there; use caution!
