Scenery:
Distance:3.15 miles

Hike Time:1.5 hours

Summary: This section of the Montour Trail is Mile Zero for what will ultimately extend 47 miles Southeast to Clairton. From Montour Road it travels South past the Forest Grove shooting ranges and the Santucci Conservation Area.

The profile makes it look more difficult than it really is as, like most rail-trails, it is fairly flat. The trail runs right along side Mountour Run and crosses it three times on bridges. When it's been raining, the run will be muddy, high and fast.

The surcace is crushed limestone and in only a few places has the fine surface been eroded away to reveal some of the larger grains below. However, there is no roughness of any significance.

Trailhead: The northernmost point on the Montour Trail (N40 30.303 W80 8.707) is located east of Coraopolis. From I-79 north, get off at exit 64 (Rt 51) and turn left. Travel about .7 miles, then make a very sharp right turn onto Montour Rd. Traveling I-79 south there is no Coraopolis exit, so take the Neville Island exit. At the end of the offramp turn left onto Island Avenue, cross a bridge into Coraopolis where you will be forced to turn right. Take the next two lefts to Rt. 51 south. Travel 3/4 of a mile and turn left where you see a sign for the Montour Trail.

The lot at Beaver Grade Rd. (N40 27.997 W80 9.302) can be accessed from the Rt. 60 West Exit of I-79.Turn right onto Beaver Grade Road about 1.2 miles from the exit then onto Old Beaver Grade another 1.2 miles beyond that.

There is also a lot with a water fountain where Hassam Rd. crosses Montour Run (N40 29.506 W80 9.052)

As of December 2005, there is still some construction near the terminus of the trail as a sewage like is lain along the trail right-of-way but otherwise all the damage done by last year's hurricane has been repaired.

Reviewed by KG on 9/27/2004
September 2004's inundation by the remenants of Hurricane Ivan caused Montour Run to overflow its back, causing extensive damage to the trail. The bridges have survived but much of the trail has been washed away. There are places where gullies several feet deep have been cut through the bed. This section of the trail has been closed for the time being.
