Summary: Centrally located at an elevation of 10,850' Yosemite's Mount Hoffman provides one of the best overall views of the park. The short hiking distance make this a popular hike. The trail to May Lake is a short and pleasant climb. From May Lake the official trail disappears and becomes somewhat steeper and there are several use trails to the summit. Route finding isn't difficult, but there is a section of loose rock to deal with. The only drawback of your summit experience is that you will have to share it with a tower that was erected years back, but the views make sharing worthwhile! For more details and photos visit my website The Backcountry: Mt. Hoffman. Trailhead: Depending on your location, enter Yosemite National Park via Highway 41, 120 or 140. Be prepared to pay $20 for the entrance fee. Once in the park head towards May Lake on Tioga Road (Highway 120). Take the May Lake turn off and drive about 2 miles until you reach the locked gate. The trailhead is a few yards before the gate. (Lat:37.846 Lon:-119.51) Trail Guides for Mount Hoffman - Yosemite NP, CA: Yosemite National Park by Jeffrey P. The view was worth every foot in elevation gain! We saw deer and many marmots. We made the hike into a loop and came down the other side of the mountain. We also camped at May Lake and did the hike from camp. It was a GREAT day. My husband and I took a trip to Hoffman in early June. We camped at May Lake. Although it was very cold and covered with snow, the view was breathtaking. We experienced a violent thunderstorm during our night stay. It was a very scary but was an awesome thing to experience. We summit the mountain the next morning very quickly because the risk of lightning storms. The view from the top was beautiful and would do it again. This is one of the best hikes in Yosemite National Park. A beautiful lake, panoramic views, and a 10,880' peak - what's not to like? My husband and I hiked to the summit on a Sunday, and had the peak and views to ourselves. The last quarter mile, trekking upward across decomposed granite was challenging. But what a reward! The vertical drop to the north from the summit is dizzying. There were a few patches of snow still clinging to the jagged escarpments. The unnamed lakes below glittered like jewels in the midday sun. Fat, curious and hungry marmots closed in on us as we sat on top and ate our lunch - it was hilarious - like high Sierra zombies in an alpine version of Night of the Living Dead! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
