Mt. Dickerman

View this trail on the brand new LocalHikes.com

Highlights:

Steep trail, fantastic views from Baker to Rainier and all points in between.
Near:Granite Falls, WA
Scenery:
Distance:8.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3800 ft
Hike Time:5.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This trail has a big elevation gain, but there are many switchbacks, so the grade doesn't feel nearly as bad as the 3800 feet suggests. It's tough, but the end result is amazing. Forget Mt. Si. Here you get the same elevation gain in a similar distance, but the 360 degree views make this far superior to the forest and highway views from the more popular Si.

Climb through the forest for about 2 miles. The trail will open up a bit at this point. The trail evens out in a short while for about a mile. Look back for views. Then, back to the uphill. You'll see your destination far uphill as you look out over Perry Creek.

The views are absolutely incredible. I've done probably 40 hikes in the Seattle area, and this is one of the tops for views. As long as you are in good shape, you'll be fine.

Cautions: I did this trail in June. Lots of snow, and 2003 was a low snow year. My dog had a tough time on the last snow covered slope because of the grade.

Trailhead: Drive the Mountain Loop Highway through Granite Falls and past the Verlot Ranger Station. 16.5 miles east of the ranger station, you'll see the new parking lot on the right. It's 2+ miles past the Big Four Picnic area and 3 miles from Barlow Pass. (Lat:48.051 Lon:-121.485)

Excellently maintained trail. There are no real tough parts, but no easy parts either. All clear except for a bit of icy snow on top from a few inches last week. Some water available mostly lower down. The view is absolutely stunning. The wildflowers have been replaced by some early fall color. Could not have asked for a more beautiful day. Allow almost as much time to get down if you care about your knees.

This is a very good hike to do for a moderate workout in the winter time. We went up this today in about 2 hours and then back down in about 1.5 hours (we've done this hike many times). Most of the snow is off the trail until the waterfall, and then it becomes quite heavy and deep. Be prepared for snow hiking (snow-shoes or skis recommended) if traversing past the waterfall, but boots will work if enough people have formed a trail before you.

Up top are beautiful berry filled meadows, astounding fall colors, mountains surround you, even the Greenbank gap on Whidbey Island is visible. What a BEAUTIFUL place He gave us.

Cool enough in the woods, despite the switchbacks. The profusion of berries in the meadows was a nice surprise, and certainly slowed progress! great visibility of the volcanoes and lesser lights, with good lunch rocks at the top.

This is a tough hike, perhaps more difficult than Si, but well worth the effort. The views are spectacular (Mt Baker, Forgotten, Pugh, Glacier Peak, Big 4, Pilchuck, etc) and the mountain blueberries are ripe and plentiful right now. It took us about 3 hours up and 2.5 down - leave lots of time for berry picking and bring plenty of water! Also pay attention to the trailhead driving directions above, as some hiking books are unclear.

Beautiful view. Try going in September-October when all the leaves are changing color-it's breath-taking. We took the most amazing photos we've ever taken on hikes here. Definitely take some bug spray and beware of attack bees!
