Summary: This trail has a big elevation gain, but there are many switchbacks, so the grade doesn't feel nearly as bad as the 3800 feet suggests. It's tough, but the end result is amazing. Forget Mt. Si. Here you get the same elevation gain in a similar distance, but the 360 degree views make this far superior to the forest and highway views from the more popular Si. Climb through the forest for about 2 miles. The trail will open up a bit at this point. The trail evens out in a short while for about a mile. Look back for views. Then, back to the uphill. You'll see your destination far uphill as you look out over Perry Creek. The views are absolutely incredible. I've done probably 40 hikes in the Seattle area, and this is one of the tops for views. As long as you are in good shape, you'll be fine. Cautions: I did this trail in June. Lots of snow, and 2003 was a low snow year. My dog had a tough time on the last snow covered slope because of the grade. Trailhead: Drive the Mountain Loop Highway through Granite Falls and past the Verlot Ranger Station. 16.5 miles east of the ranger station, you'll see the new parking lot on the right. It's 2+ miles past the Big Four Picnic area and 3 miles from Barlow Pass. (Lat:48.051 Lon:-121.485) Trail Guides for Mt. Try going in September-October when all the leaves are changing color-it's breath-taking. We took the most amazing photos we've ever taken on hikes here. Definitely take some bug spray and beware of attack bees! Awesome view of Cascade hills. Took 3.5 hrs to Hike up and 2 hours to hike back. Take plenty of Water and also beware of Bee's. Very awesome hike! Dry all the way up, made it in 1.5 hours. Good idea to have some bug spray with you when its break time. Great Hike...did that on the last week of June...Last 1 mile on the snow was really tough. We got lost thrice and took directions from the descending hikers. At the end, you'll enjoy a breath taking view of the Big 4's, Cascade hills, Baker and all...A 360 degree view. Take care when hiking in July-August as the snow on the summit might melt and get slippery.... Breath taking hike...But remember to take lot of drinking water with you... good views, nice elevation gain. pretty fun to do. strenuous, but the switchbacks make it easier. there are a ton of them. try counting, i gaurantee you'll lose track. do as an overnight, the sunrise is AWESOME. good campsites a few hundred feet below the summit. I just got back from a day at Dickerman, and I've got to agree, it's a really good hike. It's December, and we were the first ones of the day to go up, so it was a workout. We had to plow through a two-three feet of snow near the top, and we lost the trail because of the snow, unfortunately, but up is up, so we made it fine. It was supposed to be rainy, but because of the height we got snowflakes instead, so it was a great winter hike. Only a bad wind at the top, so temperature is fine with good winter gear. I'd like to do it again when the top isn't in a cloud, so you can see more than just big 4, but it was still fun. Great hike ! Just moved here from Miami, FL, first 3 mi of switchbacks were a healthy constant uphill walk ( ~ 40deg ). Then it levels off ( whew, finally ), but he last mi and some to get to summit was the killer. The work was tough, but it was all worth it when you get to the summit. The views are spectacular ! Directions are right on point. Tough hike, but well worth it at the top ! 7/05 and few isolated patches of snow, nothing heavy. Nice and sunny and hot !
