Summary: The hike leads up the main road, then crosses the perimeter road, and keeps going up the mountain. There are many switchbacks, and watch out for poison oak. The hike leads up the north face, wraps around to the south face, giving you great views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate. Turn left at the North Ridge trail near the top of the mountain, this leads to a lookout, where you can see the entire bay. Heading back down, turn onto North Ridge trail, and head down to fire road, and turn right when you get down to the perimeter road. Past the old hospital is a split for quarry beach, and the picnic grounds. Head down to the beach for nice views of Berkeley and Oakland. Hike back up toward the perimeter road, and the direction you came down, but stay on the road, all the way back around to Ayala Cove. Trailhead: The only way to get to Angel Island State Park without your own sailboat, is to take the Ferry from Alameda/Oakland, San Francisco, Tiburon, or Vallejo. The ferry drops you at Ayala Cove, where the hike leads up the main road. Reviewed by Carl on 9/1/2008 Very nice all around hike. Was suprised at how long it seemed to take. All of the switchbacks kept it from getting too steep. The views were spectacular. I found it somewhat strenuous. Wore sneakers and that was fine.
Reviewed by Sally on 8/23/2008 This hike has nice views, but it's really nothing special, and if you want solitude, then you'll definitely need a different hike. The picnic tables at the top were completely filled when I got there at 11 a.m.
Reviewed by Amar on 1/21/2008 This is a very nice hike for the entire family. Our youngest is 6 and he managed the hike well. Steep in places, but nicely maintained trail. The view from the top is gorgeous and worth the hike. Couple of tips: dress in layers. Its quite windy and chilly at the top. Also, pick a clear summer day for the hike. The infamous San Francisco fog can quickly roll in and obscure the view from the top. All in all, a great hike. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
