Summary: We took the left most trail to the summit. It provides a short and direct route but has some challenging cliffs to ascend or navigate around. This mountain sees plenty of traffic so the trail is easy to find and there are many side routes around obstacles. The trail splits in several places and confuses some people but generally the main trail is obvious and the splits converge. Just follow the blue blazes and arrows. Take time to notice the lovely boulders alongside the trail. This is a challenging but good hike for children and novices. Trailhead: Parking lot is on the left hand side or Route 11 just 4.2 miles north of the town of Alton Bay. There is a sign on route 11. Trailhead is on the back right side of the parking lot if you are facing the mountain. There is a small trail on the left back side of the parking lot but this is not the trail for Mt Major. What we love most about this mountain are the gifts of nature we have enjoyed from year to year, the views of the lake, the bright colored Efts (get there early morning to see the Efts), Lady Slippers (Straightback is where you'll see these), and the blueberries, tons of blueberries! Great hike overall but I find it much nicer in the winter - fewer crowds and much nicer views of the bay. Crampons are a must in the winter and stay on the trail! The snow pack is very deep and a few steps in wither direction will send you in to your waist. A great hike - enjoy! I have hiked here many times, a group of friends and I went up yesterday with snow, ice, and a 20 degree temp. not to even mention the wind. but we used crampons and have a lot of fun. AND ITS WINTER! this mountain had difficult parts to it especially since i went up in 60 mph wind gusts. but overall a good, challanging hike and this was my first ever hike Took the Boulder Loop trail up. Some steep sections but not too bad. Limited views at the top due to the weather but pretty spectacular none the less. Took the Brook Trail down and it eventually ends up on a dirt road for the last 20 minutes or so. My Dad took my brother and I for our first hike on Mt. Major. The hike was awsome and the wheather was perfect and the view was incredible. I want to thank my Dad for taking us.I hope we can go hiking again! Had a great first hike. The day was extremely clear and the air was crisp and fresh. The view was fabulous. Would do it again. Good climb, went up blue trail came down red. Strenuous at times but the view was worth it!
