Trail Condition:Well maintained trail

Summary: We took the left most trail to the summit. It provides a short and direct route but has some challenging cliffs to ascend or navigate around. This mountain sees plenty of traffic so the trail is easy to find and there are many side routes around obstacles.

The trail splits in several places and confuses some people but generally the main trail is obvious and the splits converge. Just follow the blue blazes and arrows.

Take time to notice the lovely boulders alongside the trail.

This is a challenging but good hike for children and novices.

Trailhead: Parking lot is on the left hand side or Route 11 just 4.2 miles north of the town of Alton Bay. There is a sign on route 11.

Trailhead is on the back right side of the parking lot if you are facing the mountain. There is a small trail on the left back side of the parking lot but this is not the trail for Mt Major. (Lat:43.50396 Lon:-71.29729)

Did the Orange to Yellow loop today. Trails clear and virtually no mud. Great day for a work out and summited in 45 minutes and the decent was same. Better than working out at PF on the ellipticals! Weather cloudy but in the 70's. Come out to Alton and take in a good hike

Hiked Sat 04-14-12, with 2 Yorkies & an 11 yr old Golden Retreiver. Weather was perfect, not overly hot nor cold. Took blue trail out of parking lot off Rte 11. Bugs not out yet in full force. It was refreshing to see a few older couples hiking as we are 55 and 52 yrs old. Views were excellent and trail is well maintained. Also hiked Straightback Mtn this day. Would do it many times over.

Had a great day hiking with family and friends. Had 8 kids ranging in age from 13 to 2. Hiked blue trail up and at times nerve racking because it was pretty icey but we all made it to the top. Beautiful views and the kids were proud of themselves. Hiked orange trail down which was a perfect trail for all of us. Had a fantastic day and we can't wait to hike Mt Major in the spring.

Decided that 11/19/2011 was a perfect day for a hike. Have always wanted to hike Mt Major. For a couple of 60 year olds that stay very active but hadn't hiked in a while it made for the perfect climb. The weather was perfect, the views were fantastic and the trail was about all the challenge we wanted having not hiked in a while. We had to push ourselves to do the last 500' but it sure was worth hanging out on the summit and feeling good about yourself.

Today was my first ever hike up Mt. Major. I couldn't find the orange trail, so we went up the yellow/sometimes blue. It was steep and hard, but SO worth the view at the top. Def. will do it again before the snow comes. Maybe even do it then too, but I will need the proper equipment. Great day, lots of people coming down encouraging the ones coming up.
