Sycamore Trail - W.B. Umstead State Park

Highlights:

Easy 6.6 mile wooded stroll. Nicely isolated away from the metro triangle area.
Near:Raleigh, NC
Scenery:
Distance:6.75 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:791 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Loop

Summary: This is a good woods walk. No overlooks and no great mountainous expansions.... but, given that the park bumps up right against Raleigh, it's a great place to get away from the traffic. The trail rambles around on the northern side of the park (somebody else reviewed the southern half trail), and is lightly populated with people except on weekends. You might get lucky and see a snake or two, and maybe a deer, but otherwise there isn't a whole lot of wildlife on this one.

Go during fall for some great colors.
Go during rain for seclusion.
Go during winter for tolerable humidity!! ;-)

The only negative depends on the time of day... you will hear airplanes from nearby RDU.

Note: I don't have any recent pics handy, so I've "borrowed" some from misc web sites.

Trailhead: From the web site:
http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/wium/directions.html

The Crabtree Creek section is located 10 miles northwest of Raleigh off US 70. The park visitor's center and camping facilities are located in this section. From I-40, turn northeast on I-540 and take the US 70 exit. Travel southeast on US 70, and turn right on Umstead Parkway, which leads to the park office and visitor's center. Not much to see and it's always crowded...everyone in Raleigh and Durham seem to hang out here - especially families and cyclists so it's never quiet and you can't really enjoy nature.

I have measured this trail on a couple of occassions and frequently do maintenance on it. It is a 7.2 mile trail when taken from the trailhead off the last parking lot off the Umstead Parkway on the Route 70 / Crabtree Entrance. It is a beautifully scenic trail with a couple of more challenging sections but a lot of nice trail along the Sycamore Creek.
