Summary: This hike is only for those good with map and compass. The temps today were in the 20's and there was between a dusting of snow to 2 inches at the higher elevations. The Bushwhack takes you through the westkill Wilderness. You climb two of the 35 catskill peaks that are 3500ft and higher, North Dome and sherill. This makes number 30 for me. Only five more to go. The Bushwhack starts out on the devils path. Then we took a bearing straight to North Dome. the climb up was very steep and slippery. You have to use caution due to some steep ledges. Once on top of the Spruce Covered summit we took another bearing to Sherill. The hike to Sherill was much easier. Once on top of Sherill we took are final bearing down to the Westkill. When crossing Westkill use caution especially at times of high water, like today. We then took Spruceton rd back to our car. It is also hunting season so we had to wear the orange. Trailhead: Take NY throughway (I87) North. get of off Kingston exit or rt. 28. Take rt. 28 West to Shandaken. Make right onto rt. 42. Take rt. 42 through Deep Notch. Make right onto Spruceton Rd Take Spruceton Rd about 3.8 miles and trail head for Devils Path is on right. Reviewed by esp on 9/12/2005 I am looking south out my cabin window at the peaks of Sherrill and the Dome as I type. Much of the land surrounding these peaks is closed to hikers either because of wildlife protection programs or hiker-unfriendly private landowners. Please plan your route carefully and ask permission where needed. The route shown is pretty steep for an old lady with bad knees like me. There are easier approaches across Balsam peak, but they require landowner permission. 
Reviewed by George J Dagis on 5/30/2004 I scaled these two prominences separately.I mounted Sherrill via RT 42, from a point just north of Angle Creek, taking a NE course up the ridge. This hike was uneventful, through a primarily hardwood forest. North Dome was tortuous. I approached via the trail which courses south from the Spruceton Valley until about 2100 ft and subsequently bushwhacked directly to, and then up, the north ridge. Steep and slippery conditions mocked me. It was the only hike that ever required the use of my bug net. Atop the dome I spied a bird that, for the life of me, I couldn't ID. I later discovered, to my amazement, that it was a female peacock. What the heck it was doing there still perplexes me. What I was doing up there also engenders wonder.
