Summary: This trail starts off on a well marked trail off of SR58. For the most part it is down hill until intersecting with the Mountain-to-Sea Trail which heads north. This is a nice gradual uphill climb to SR464. Go left and take the second trail south to reconnect with the North Harper Creek Trail. Trailhead: Take Hwy 181 North out of Morganton approximately 20 miles. At the intersection of SR464 & SR58, go south exactly .2 miles and the marked trailhead is on the left. Pack a lunch and water. It will be a whole day hike. Very tough but fun. I would Recommend going to the left to begin the loop. Take your Teva's or boots you don't mind getting wet on the right side of the loop. No kidding leave your Teva's on you will be taking them off and on the whole right side! Have fun TAKE A MAP AND LOOK FOR TAPE ON TREES TO HELP WITH THE TRAIL. Tara is mostly right. You will need to cross the river many times. However, it IS a loop. You just need a map (you should always have one anyway) to know how to get back to where you started. If you start early and it is warm, enjoy getting your feet wet! i found a review of this trail that said it was a loop trail. it is not, you have to really know what you are doing, my hike turned into a 7 hour hike because i reached the end of harper creek trail. be careful that you know how the creek loops, wear gortex boots you have to cross the river 15 times on the way to the end of the trail then turn around and do it over again. be careful and get a very accurate map.
