Northfield Mountain is maintained and operated by Northeast Utilities. They offer a cross-country ski area during winter, and several nature programs during the summer. It is open year round for hiking. You can find an interesting description on how this area is operated and how it can be enjoyed on: http://www.nu.com/northfield/default.asp

From the visitors center walk the Jug End trail (ski trail), until you reach the Rose Ledge TR. Rose Ledge will be a thin, foot trail, crossing nice woods, and steadily climbing up the hill. This trail will take you all the way up the reservoir. Then turn back using the Tooleybush Turnpike, Ecstasy Ramble, and Hemlock Hill XC Ski Trails. Another nice foot trail (out of Hemlock Hill Tr) will bring you back to your car.

It wasn't a bad place to hike, but nothing thrilling either. You cabn't actually get to the water which was a bit of a bummer and there is nothing to draw you here, no amazing views (some nice ones), no waterfalls and no places to soak after a long walk, which really disappointed the dogs. It was a fairly quiet place with few people which was a bonus

Nice climb. Very wooded without scenic views until you get to the top. The elevation shown is not correct. The lookout is at 1100 feet, and according to the Northfield visitor center, the ascension is a total of 800 feet.
