Summary: The total distance of the Lake Grapevine Northshore Trail is approx. 9 miles one way. The portion of the hike reported on here is only from Rockledge Park Trailhead to the Murrell Park trailhead and back. This single-track natural surface trail originates in Rockledge Park to the Southeast and terminates in Rockypoint Park with additional trailheads in Murrell Park and Twin Coves Park. The trail meanders along the shoreline of Lake Grapevine and at times also goes through thick hardwood forest. Wildlife viewing opportunities include fox, deer, rabbit and abundant waterfowl and birding year round. Drinking water is available at all trailheads with public restroom facilities located only in Rockledge and Murrell Park access. Parking is abundant. Trail conditions become very difficult (steep and very rocky) at Twin Coves Park. Be wary of heavy mountain bike use as the trail is shared by both hikers and bikers. Trailhead: SH-121 North (directly North of the DFW Airport in Grapevine, TX), take the Bass Pro Drive exit and turn left (West) at the stoplight. Proceed to Northwest Highway (2nd light intersection) and turn left (South). Drive for approximately 1/2 mile and turn right (West) at Fairway Drive. Drive across the Grapevine Lake dam and then over the spillway. After 1/4 mile you will see Concourse Golf course on the right, and the entrance to Rockledge Park on the left. Turn left (west) into Rockledge park, then turn right at the first fork in the road. Drive all the way past the restroom facilities (on your right) to the edge of the lake directly in front of the trailhead. Great hike! Very scenic with wooded paths and great views of lake Grapevine. It had many uphill and downhill paths that made the hike interesting but not so many that it would be difficult for the kids. There were a fair number of mountain bikers and you have to be careful about them. Also, parts of the trail are pretty narrow and it will be difficult for younger kids if they are on bikes. I agree with one of the other posts that the mileage is a bit off. I think it is about 4 miles one way from Rockledge park to Murrell park. Too many bikes and trail was very narrow. I also noticed alot of trash you can tell that the park is not kept up by the park or the people who use it. Great hike and biking area. Mountain bikers can be coming at very fast speeds around corners, so you have to be careful. I've been on both ends and have seen numerous hikers oblivous to mountain bikers. It is a rough trail near Twin Coves Park. Right now, much of the trail is under water, as Lake Grapevine is about 20 feet about the normal leverl. Brink a kayak. Beautiful views, lots of butterflys and water view. Very peaceful. Mountain bikers have to carry bikes up a few spots but easy to walk it. I think the mileage is a bit off. It's almost 4 miles each way from Rockledge to Murrell. Will be taking a GPS for the next hike and measuring it. After not seeing the park after 3.25 miles on the pedometer (we started at Rockledge), we turned back. Nice hike, lots of wildlife and flowers. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
