Summary: With this route, you'll spend more time exposed on the lower slopes; which means it'll be HOT in the summer daytime. This route is also used by the wranglers giving horse back rides from Spring Mountain State Park and Bonnie Springs, so you'll have plenty of company on this trail. It is such a wide, graded trail it would take a lot of effort to get lost! Once you walk up the rich red soil and drop down behind the hill, you'll be in the area we call the "haunted canyon". This is a wonderful spot, full of beauty and solitude (except on weekends), and the best part is you still have the creek ahead of you. There are many shady trees and great boulders for picnic spots, just be sure to haul your trash out with you. I've found many trail runners use this route the past few years -- beware so you, your dog, or horse isn't spooked by someone silently running up behind you. If you prefer, you can always head L (W) up into the upper canyon instead of R(E) after the hill. Trailhead: Red Rock Canyon is located 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave. (SR 159). Go past the entry (fee) station/visitor's center, past the Overlook (RR, pkg, picnic shades), past the exit from loop road (horse corral), look for sign to old Oak Creek CG. You will NOT be entering the fee area or the scenic loop. There are dirt pullouts to park & a gate taking you past the old campground. Follow the wide, graded trail as it heads NW towards the red hills around Oak Creek. Follow the trail up and over the hill as it drops down into the canyon (veer to the R) -- there are many paths here to confuse you. Follow the trail as it takes you E into the lower canyon & loop back to your original wide graded trail back to the old CG. I hike it often and sometimes take an obscure trail up the backside of potato knoll. Or take a cold soak in one of the pools offerd by Oak Creek.
