Summary: My hike started at the North Trailhead with the first section of the Blue Trail that can be found only a few yards from the entrance to the North Trailhead. Follow the Blue Trail approximately 3 miles until you reach the Orange connector on your right. Turn off the Blue Trail onto the Orange connector and take this trail back until you reach the first section of the White Trail. Follow the White Trail north to return to the North Trailhead. The hike is a great day hike and can be completed in about 3 hours. Although I did this hike in late summer, the hike would be a nice trip in any season, especially in the fall when the leaves change colors. There are some beautiful views from the top of the mountain, as well as, some magnificent rock formations along the trail. A good pair of well-fitting boots is recommended since portions of the hike are over some very uneven, rocky areas. I really enjoyed taking this hike and feel sure that others will also. Trailhead: To reach the North Trailhead in Oak Mtn State Park travel I-65 to Cahaba Valley Road (Exit 246). Follow the signs to Oak Mtn State Park. You will travel State Park Road to the entrance of Oak Mtn State Park. Once entering Oak Mtn State Park, follow John Findley Drive approximately 2-3 miles until you see the North Trailhead on your right. A parking area is provided directly across the entrance to the North Trailhead. Trail maintenance is not an issue if you wear good hiking boots. It's part of nature and I'd rather see a natural trail then a "groomed" trail. The white trail is great. At one point it is on top of a ridge. It's great to look out to both sides and see for miles and miles. Nice hike - did it spring 2005. Pretty views, starts with nice uphill then follows ridge for most of middle of hike - downhill on white trail is steeper than uphill on blue trail, so keep that in mind if you decide to do it in reverse. My wife and I hiked this loop New Years Day 2004. It was a beautiful day. The White Trail is not in good shape and in need of repair. There are a lot of loose stones (baseball size) under the leaves on the way down the mountain that make the trip treacherous and very slow. On the last leg where the White Trail and the Yellow intersect, we took the Yellow leg back to the trailhead. The Yellow has a lot of downed pine trees(pine beetles) across the trail.
