Summary: This is a great day hike to go on with the family. The elevation gain is enough to make it feel like a 'real' hike, while not severe enough to not take the kids. In fact, my two children ages 8 and 12, took this hike with me. From the North Trailhead take the Blue Trail up the mountain. You can enjoy some of the large boulders you will pass while going up the mountain. About 3/4 of the way up the mountain you will reach the Red/Blue Connector on your right, take the Red/Blue connector for a leisurely stroll back down the mountain to the Red (Bike) Trail. Turn right on the Red Trail and follow it back to where you began your adventure at the North Trailhead. I, along with my children, really enjoyed taking this hike today and we hope that you also enjoy it. Trailhead: To reach the North Trailhead in Oak Mtn State Park travel I-65 to Cahaba Valley Road (Exit 246). Follow the signs to Oak Mtn State Park. You will travel State Park Road to the entrance of Oak Mtn State Park. Once entering Oak Mtn State Park, follow John Findley Drive approximately 2-3 miles until you see the North Trailhead on your right. A parking area is provided directly across the entrance to the North Trailhead. There is a $2 fee for adults and a $1 fee for children under 12 to enter the park. This one is a little steep in parts but a good walk for some good excercise. The scenery is beautiful. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
