Summary: This "trail" is not so much a trail as a trek across some of the most impressive dunes in the west. Once you get out of the tree cover the choice of routes is yours but be sure not to lose where you came from as the dunes can be vast and disorienting. Watch out for dirt bikes and quads as you trek across the inspiration for Frank Herberts "Dune" novels. About two miles out there is a thin strip of trees seperating the dunes from the coast. Follow dirt bike trails out to the beach. The riptide on the coast can be dangerous so be careful in the water. Trailhead: The trailhead to the dunes begins in J.M. Honeyman memorial state park 3 miles south of Florence on hwy 101. Turn right into the park and take a left at the fork. Follow the signs to overnight camping but stop before the actual campground. You will see a sign on the right that says Dune Trail, Motor vehicles prohibited.
