Piedmont Environmental Center Loop Hike

Highlights:

Nice trails close to High Point, Kudzu castle, and lakeshore views.
Near:High Point, NC
Scenery:
Distance:3 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:180 ft
Hike Time:1.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Loop

Summary: There are many combinations of loop hikes you can put together here. The trails are not very well marked and the map can be confusing in some areas on the South Preserve. Longer loops can be put together if you hike on both the North and South Preserves.

All trails begin from the parking area in front of the center. Make sure you hike the Lakeshore and Raccoon Run trails for good views of the lake and High Point City Lake Park. The trails at PEC pass through old homesites and young forests. Many of the areas were probably once old fields that were farmed and now the forest is replacing them. Don't miss the Kudzu patch at the intersection of the red and white trail. It's quite impressive. This area is a good place to hike to escape the city sounds of High Point and Greensboro.

Trailhead: The Piedmont Environmental Center (PEC) is located in High Point, NC just South of Jamestown. From I-40 in Greensboro take the Wendover Avenue exit towards High Point. After approximately 4.5 miles come to an intersection with Penny Rd. Turn left on Penny Rd. and travel approximately 2 miles and the PEC will be on the left. (Lat:36.00429 Lon:-79.95387)

I have been running for about 25 years. I looked forward to the day of getting off the roads and in a natural area. Recently Duke Energy treated the City of High Points Environmental Center trails with hazardous herbicides with no public notice or warning. The City of High Point from what I understand endorses this practice, it needs to be stopped. The herbicides are very hazardous to humans. See the site I created and please share this with other runners if you can. Also let the City of High Point know you want this practice stopped.
