Summary: This is a pleasant relatively easy hike through rolling grasslands and oak groves. The first section of trail had an amazing number of birds including scrub jays, sparrows, mocking birds, and others I could not identify. I found it amusing that many of the oak trees had very small numbers on them, as if they were addresses for the squirrels living in the trees. The last mile or so of the hike is less pretty, but has some interesting rock formations. Trailhead: From Highway 101/Ventura Freeway, exit on Kanan Road. Head north 2.2 miles to Sunnycrest Drive and turn right. Continue 0.8 miles to the "Public Open Space" sign on the right. Park along the curb. Everyone is so friendly and there appears to be some great mountainbiking as well. thx I've hiked Palo Comado Canyon a few times, since I live right there in Oak Park. Very enjoyable, trail is very well maintained. If you keep going through China Flats, you can walk all the way to Simi Valley, which took a friend and I almost 4 hours walking. Be aware if you're walking to Simi, once you crest over the ridges above Oak Park, and through China Flats, you'll walk through an absolutely wild valley, and have to Crest another ridge before you're above Simi. First time I did it, I thought there was only one set of mountains I'd have to hike... but alas. Anyway - I have pictures of my entire Palo Comado hike on my personal photo gallery... http://www.thomasruschke.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=48 Hiked a loop comprised of Palo Comado Canyon, Sheep Corral Trail, Chesebro Canyon and Ranch Connector Trail on 10/30. The views were particularly good near the intersection of Palo Comado and Sheep Corral. The landscape has changed greatly because of the wildfires at the end of September. Many grasses and small plants are already growing back. Most creeks are still dry, but Sulphur Springs along the Baleen Wall/Chesebro Canyon trail was flowing strongly. Attempted this hike in January while on business from Vermont. Started the hike in late afternoon and only made it to the first stream. The water was fairly high so backtracked to a trail the spurred off to a ridge on the right. Had nice views of the surrounding area. Very nice area to relax and enjoy the countryside. We made this a 5 mile loop by connected in at the Doubletree Rd. access, looping around to the Cheeseboro Cyn trail and connecting back over on the Ranch Center trail. It was a great hike filled with lots of wildlife including rabbits (not scared of humans!), giant crows, birds of all sorts, lizards (saw two varieties), tadpoles and frogs in the creek. Also the wildfloweres were incredible, I thought they would be gone by now but we saw at least 15 different varieties. It was really cool to see the source of the sulphur springs and follow the blue green creek down the canyon. There were a lot of mountain bikes but everybody was super friendly. You will need to do a tick check (we found one on me). We will definitely do this one again. Make it a round trip by connecting to the Chesboro canyon. Many mountain bikes Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
