Summary: A great day for viewing the Fall Foliage. The loop I did today takes you through some great forest of Hemlocks, Beach, Oak, Sugar and Red Maples and Birch trees. Along the Howell, Cartwright, and Criss trails you go along many creeks. Like the Flatbrook, Criss, Forked and Parker Brooks, making for a very scenic hike, especially with the Foliage. You will also cross over a wild Trout Stream, the Parker Brook. Along the loop you come to one great viewpoint overlooking Stokes, High Point and the Poconos. Down in the Valleys you also come to old stone foundations from farms that once worked the land. There is a dried-up well along the Cartwright Trail and many springs along the Howell trail. Along the Flatbrook there is an old foundation from a Grist Mill. Today I also saw 5 Black bears. The most I have seen in one day. Lots of Bear activity in the area of the Howell and Parker Trails intersection. They are getting nice a chubby for the long winter ahead.
Trailhead: From Sussex boro. Take rt. 23 North. Make a left onto rt. 650. There will be a sign for Milford Bridge and Beemerville. Take rt. 650 up Mt. You will come to sign for entering High Point and Stokes State Forest. Go to top of hill and then rd goes down. You will then pass Sawmill Rd in Right. About .3 miles past sawmill Rd you will come to the Parker trail crossing, just past the swamp and Flatbrook. Park on the left or go just up rd a few hundred feet and there is a pull off. The post for this hike was very well put together. The hike was extremely enjoyable. Only problem was finding the Grey trail turnoff from the AT. But we just kept going on the AT to the Leantoo's and the road back to the car. Call it an alternate root. Great fall colors.
