Summary: This is a simple nature trail. The interpretive signs are informative and different from those on the other trails in the forest. This is a simple hike on a barren windswept mountainside. The majesty of these special trees is ever present. Trailhead: Drive north on the 395 to Big Pine, turn left onto the 168 east. There are signs for the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Follow the 168 through Westgard Pass, and turn left onto the forest road that leads to the ABPF. At Schulman Grove the road becomes dirt, but it is easily passable to the Patriarch Grove even in passenger cars. It might be slow going, but it is not as tough as going all the way to White Mountain. You do not have to pay to enter this area. The fee is $2.50 per person at Schulman Grove. Both areas are worth visiting.
