Summary: This is an excellent work-out/conditioning trail and can be hiked year-round. The trail starts out on an old logging road. It ascends 1000 feet in the first mile. Pay attention to your route as there are lots of trails in the area and is easy to get lost on your way back out. There is a trail around Cedar Lake and campsites around both lakes. Fishing is allowed. Trailhead: From I-5 in Bellingham, take the Fairhaven exit and go west. Turn left on 12th St and follow the Chuckanut Drive (SR 11) and go south 1.3 miles and turn left on Old Samish Hwy. The trailhead will be on the right in about 2 miles. Be aware that there have been reports of vehicle break-ins here as it is close to the city. Trail Reviews Submit your own review Close enough to downtown Bellingham so that you dont have spend much on gas getting to the trailhead (or better yet, you can bike out there). Fairly steep climb immediately after you leave the parking lot but levels out just when you need it to. Nice view of Baker at the very top. Lots of little annoying black flies in August. Bring an all natural bug repellent if you think you might be bothered. Great "close to town" hike. Friends and I use it to get in shape for bigger hikes and mountaineering. I personally like it the best in the winter when you want to find some snow. We make an effort every year to hike up in the night during a snow storm. It's a blast! Planning on heading up tomorrow 12/29/2007 for a snow party at the lake :) JCL Very steep first mile but on a well maintained trail. The hike is through the forest which is nice on a hot day. The vista point trail part of the way around Cedar Lake is steep and not well marked but the trail is fairly easy to follow. The viewpoint at the end on a rock is a good place for a picnic. It is just a short walk from Cedar to Pine Lake. This is a good hike to prepare yourself for longer, steeper hikes. I probably won't hike again because there are so many, many other hikes available in this area. It was well worth the time and effort. We took this trail to get to Raptor Ridge, which I thought was VERY worth it. We only visited Cedar Lake because by the time we got around to it, we were really tired! its early in the season and the bugs were already annoying. awesome short but close to town hike, good workout, love the burn as i grind up the steep sections, beautiful partial view of the san juans and an alright view of mt.baker and the twins... the lakes are peaceful and definately worth the effort. tranquility abounds at the top, but u sweat for it... no joke. pack water and an energy bar or two (cliff) hint hint. laughs, and yep, mosquitos attack'd in swarms once we top'd out. bring deet and lather it on thick! could just be the time of year... i dunno. definately recommend this hike, one step at a time, we'll make it to the top! The hike is strenuous, but you are rewarded with excellent scenery at both lakes. We fished at Cedar Lake for a few hours with no luck. The hike from Cedar to Pine Lake feels easy compared to the trip up. Pine lake is larger than Cedar, and it is much more difficult to circle the lake, but there are paths. Fishing seems OK at Pine, I cast out and within a few minutes had a bite - good luck finding a spot though. When I hiked this trail i was a begginer. It was very steep and hard to hike. THe lakes are nice when you get there. Fishing was fun but didnt catch anything. One of my favorites in the area, a good work out that pays off with the views, I highly recommend it.
