Pinnacle Mountain Trail

Highlights:

Strenuous hike to summit of Pinnacle Mountain. Small waterfalls. Good overlook.
Near:Pickens, SC
Scenery:
Distance:6 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2673 ft
Hike Time:4 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trailhead is just beyond the Nature Center at the edge of the parking lot. Be sure and fill out the self-service trail registration at the trailhead.

The first 0.2 miles is a relatively flat, paved path that parallels a creek. Small cascades and pools are easily accessible from the trail. After the pavement ends, follow the trail signs for the Pinnacle Mtn. trail.

The trail is in fair shape most of the way. There is significant erosion in a few places and parts of the trail can be quite muddy.

At about the 2.5 mile mark is the Bald Rock Overlook where you can look back towards Table Rock Mtn. The summit is marked by a sign and a pile of rocks but you're in the middle of a forest with no view. Return the way you came or continue on the Ridge Trail that connects the Pinnacle Mountain and Table Rock trails.

Trailhead: From Greenville, SC drive north on US 276. US 276 will merge with SC 11. Continue on SC 11 when it branches off to the left (US 276 continues to the right towards Ceasar's Head). Table Rock State Park will be on the right side of SC 11 about 7 miles from the SC 11/US 276 fork. Enter the West Gate of the park and follow the signs to the Day Use Parking Lot and Nature Center.

Travelers on I-26 can get on SC 11 at Exit 5.

There is a $2.00/person day use fee that is payable at the gate. (Lat:35.03173 Lon:-82.70067)

Did this hike with a group of about 20. Those saying that the best view is bald rock are wrong- you must continue past the summit, past panther(?) gap and there is a trail spur that leads to an amazing overlook. It does, however, add a few miles of strenuous and sometimes slick surfaces.

Four of us took this hike this past weekend 2/23/08. It was quite strenuous for us. We just started hiking and have never tried anything like this. Two of us weigh around 320 lbs., but we made it. Even though for us it was tough, it was quite enjoyable. The view at Bald Rock was worth the trip. I would suggest that unless you just want to make it to the top, that you turn around at this point, because there isn't much to see at the top, and it gets steep after Bald Rock. I was sore the next day, but it was a great hike.

Hiked a loop with my wife to the top of Pinnacle and back down the Ridge Trail to Mill Creek Pass and had a fantastic time. View in the winter is incredible because there are no leaves on the trees. Several smaller falls along the hike, 8 small bridges and some challenging sections make this one a must do. Only drawback were some poorly marked forks off the Mill Creek Pass trail which could confuse someone.

Hiked this January 7, it was 60 degrees, but the trees were bare so you could see a long way for most of the hike. It was very nice at the bald. Took wrong turn on the trail just after mill creek pass. Trail cut back on itself and there was an abandoned trail that continued down the mountain, and after about 20 minutes it became very evident we were not on the right trial, when back and on the way back it was evident that there was a Y in the trail.

To get the most scenery for a day's hiking, stop and enjoy the view from Bald Rock, then back track a little and take Mill Creek Pass to Ridge Trail. At the next junction, take Table Rock Trail up to Governor's Rock, for another nice view. Now it's decision time. You're less than a mile (a very steep mile) from the best view of all at Table Rock, but if you decide to head on up you'll end up about 3.5 miles from the parking lot.

I found this trail to be pretty difficult - especially the last third which is very steep. One piece of advice - if you are going strictly for the view, there is no need to go past the Bald Mountain Overlook - the top of Pinnacle Mountain is very wooded and is only marked by a faded metal sign and a survey post.

Hiked this trail yesterday. After I reached the top of Pinnacle Mtn I went down Ridge trail to Table Rock trail and back down to the parking area which gives a total of around 7 miles or so. Very few people on the trail until I reached Table Rock trail which was crowded.

For another alternative, Carrick Creek Trail is about a mile in length, and pretty easy to moderate. It is one of the alternate routes at Table Rock State Park.
