James River Park System: Pony Pasture

Highlights:

Woods and meadow walk along the Pony Pasture Rapids of the James River
Near:Richmond, VA
Scenery:
Distance:2.25 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:20 ft
Hike Time:1 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Loop

Summary: The nature trails throughout the Pony Pasture / Wetlands area of the James River Park System affords plenty of opportunities for exploration. The primary path of packed crushed gravel has plenty of side trails leading closer to the river's edge as well as through the meadows and woodlands.

As you begin your journey be sure to take one of the side trails towards the Pony Pasture Rapids as you are likely to have the opportunity to view some kayaks and canoes navigating the rocky course.

With these side trails though comes a lack of maintenance and given the location not a suprising amount of mud to navigate (pure joy for an 8 year old boy).

If hiking with children, as you continue your journey east, you are best to stick close to the main trails and possibly even avoid the trek across the foot bridge to the Wetlands area as the path becomes quite soggy.

Overall a rather unremarkable hike aside from the occasionally nice views of the James River.

Trailhead: Trailhead is located on the southside of the James River, off of Riverside Drive, near to Huguenot Road. Follow signs on either side of Huguenot Road to the James River Park "Pony Pasture Rapids" parking area. (Lat:37.55134 Lon:-77.51995)
