Summary: Powell Butte is one of those places that you stumble upon one day and you wonder why you didn't know about it before. There are miles of loops and interconnected trails around the top and sides of the butte. You can take a walk of any length you like by combining the trails. The most direct route to the top is a paved, easy walk for any casual hiker. Right at the top, on the North side of the butte, you'll find a compass of sorts - pointers to all the buttes, mountains and named hills in a 360 degree radius, with distances to each and their elevations. This is a great place to picnic (tables are provided), see a sunset, take some pictures, or just walk and think. Coming down from the top one day two deer jumped accross my path just in front of me. Enjoy the great outdoors just a few minutes from home, whether you're walking, biking or horseback riding. One thing I enjoy - seeing lights come on at dusk in dark area while the sun is still sinking in the west.
Trailhead: In Portland, head out on SE 162nd Avenue and follow it up the hil just accross Powell Blvdl. The trailhead is on your right about halfway up the hill. There is a parking lot and restrooms. Horse trailer parking is available as well. There is no fee. The park is open from 6 AM to 10PM. (Lat:45.49016 Lon:-122.49824)

This is an awesome place to watch the sunset, or just sit and relax on a sunny day!! Also great place to walk dogs, or just walk..........it's a hole in the wall spot in town. You would never know such a beautiful place can exist in town!!!

Lots of different trails. A great view of Mt. Hood. We went at dusk and got a close up view of 2 deer eating berries. Great for kids, beginners, people that just want a nice easy walk, plus its in the city!

Be careful not to leave anything of value in your vehicle here as my car was broken into and I later learned it is a common thing at this park. Still, a great place for mountain bikes with all the clean trails full of hills.

I've hiked on Powell Butte many times in many seasons. It's a great hike considering its inner-city locale. Although you might be iffy about the safety of doing so, one of my favorite times to hike Powell Butte is at night when the city lights are the feature. Not many hikes are so entertaining in the dark. Keep in mind that the gates close and you should park at the bottom of the road if you're doing this!

We did this back in November, on a clear cool day. This ended up being a nice walk around a relatively barren hill in the middle of east Portland, but not too striking. The best scenery for us was being able to see nice views of the city (Gresham/Troutdale) and surrounding hills in the distance. The actual scenery in this park was nothing to mention. Maybe this would be different in the spring. This seems like it could be a great little place for bikers and those on horseback. This was very easy for the kids, but didn't offer much for them to see or take interest in. At least this was good exercise for us, with clean air and a clear view.
