Summary: The hike starts out downhill, heading away from Skyline Blvd, and down toward the ocean. Soon after leaving the trailhead, you head out on top of one of the ocean facing ridges, where you can see the ocean and North Ridge Trail. Soon after the ocean views, the trail heads down and follows Whittemore Gulch. The trail follows the gulch down to the parking area on the opposite side of the park. The loop trail then heads up Purisima Creek. The trail meets up with the Bay Area Ridge Trail, and turns back up the ridge. This trail heads through some more redwood groves, and the ocean views return when the trail meets up with Harkins Ridge Trail. Trailhead: From I-280, turn west onto 92, towards Half Moon Bay. At the top of the hill, at Skyline Blvd., turn left (south). Take Skyline Blvd. 4.5 miles, and the parking area is on the right hand side, for about 20 cars. And it's a very pleasant hike year-round. Very nice trail. The redwoods are impressing. Hinking in the gulches very convenient. This was my free Sunday during my business trip. I combined the hike with logging some geochaches (www.geocaching.com) and thus took a detour into the Grabtown Gulch Trail which I can recommend as well. BTW: The leaflet from Open Space claims a trail length of 10 miles and 1,400 feet elevation change. Great place Quiet peaceful and good place to mountain bike. Great views, lots of wildlife, variety of forest (redwoods, pine, scrub), good workout, sufficient parking, & ez to get to (not far off 92). The best hike I have done so far in the bay area. Especially appealing to those who love greenery. Most of the time you are under the shade of the giant redwoods.Variety of flora.Nice creeks and canyons. Fallen trees here and there. Great views. As if a harbinger of things to come, the approach to the trail head (Skyline Blvd) is itself so wonderful. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
